I just built my guinea pig a 2x3 c&c cage with a 3x1 upper loft. I put him in the cage last night and i have a few questions:

1. He won't go up the ramp. I put veggies on the ramps and he still didn't go up. I put him on the upper level and left him there for a while and he hasn't come down. I don't know what to do!

2. The upper level looks like it curves. It is not a straight level. I have cubes and coroplast but it just doesn't look like it is supported enough. What shouold i do?

3. I put the hay rack in and most of the hay just fell right through it and was on the ground. I used a bent grid as a hay rack. Anyone else use something different?

4. The cage kinda smells if you go closer to it. It isn't the smell of his poo or pee, i don't think. I think it was like when he is at floor time, he rubs his butt on the ground to kinda mark his territory. Is there any way to eliminate these odors?

Ok I think that is all the questions I have now. (LOL i know it is a lot)

1.) try draping a towel over the ramp eventually he will go in it like its a hidey house then be surprised with veggies on the other side.
2.)I know you not suppose to partion the cage but you could try putting some grids underneath the top level for more support. I think the pigs saftey is more important than running room. You could also make that section a bedroom type place.
3.) I just put the hay on the top level where they are supposed to sleep.

Im not sure about #4

ok thank you

1. How do i drape a towel over the ramp. (it has no sides)

Oh, I know about the smell you are talking about. Its so frustrating because whenever I change the towels they go an rub their bums on them! It reeks, so I always have the window open. Just give it some time with the ramp.

hmm i don't know i would put sides on the ramp, you piggy might feel more secure and be willing to go up the ramp.

ok I am going to try and make sides on the ramp.
Is there any was to get rid of the smell? Could i just spray like Oust or something?

I'm not sure. My mom is a freak about smells so i have one of the fan-airfrestioner thingies, i think oust makes it. I wouldn't use oust with the can because that stuff gives me a headach i cant imagine what it would do to a pig.

ok i won't use the caned oust i will try to get some other thing to eliminate odors.

Well, with the support, you could bend a grid till both sides touch each other, so that it looks more like a "pole" than a grid. That can be a hayrack. And just shove it under there. That's what I did, and it's a great supporter. Dosen't take up hardley any running space too!

I have my piggies food on the upper level and I showed them where it is. They love it up there. Make sure your ramp isnt too steep a slope.

I also found the hay fell through the grid. I happened to have had smaller grids so now I use that. It really doesnt matter since the piggies pull all the hay out anyway and it ends up on the floor.

I also found that parts of the 2nd level were sloping down. I took the white dowel of a metal hanger, (the white tubular thing that surrounds the wire) and broke that off the hangar. I cut it to measure the height (approx. 14") between bottom level and upper and put it in the lower level as a brace for the top level. DID YOU UNDERSTAND THAT?

yes i understood that thank you

Rusty finally went up the ramp but i had to coax him up with a sclice of carot and i had to put a towel on the ramp so he could grip it better(he could grip the fleece well) I am going to make the ramp longer because i think it is too steep.

I am going to turn the 3x1 upper level into a 2x1 and maybe it won't slope. ( I don't really nees the extra space anyway)

For the hay rack i was thinking about getting a tuberware container and jsut putting the hay in that so there will only be a little bit of hay that he pulls out.

I am going to get some sort of air freshener thing to get rid of the smells.

Thank you all for your help. If you have any other comments i would appreciate it!

I must have gone through 10 different hay rack assortments. I used 3 different cardboard boxes but I felt it took up too much room One was big enough for a piggy to jump in, didnt like that idea they pooped in it. Now Im back to the grid. Im sure I'l think of something else eventually.

Ya I am probably going to go through so many different hay racks.
