Holy moly,
for some reason I just got so excited; here's why. I found the most ADORABLE baby abby guinea pig girls in the world at my local spca. And the deal is that if you adopt them they *have* to be neutered/spayed before they leave! This means Squint could get his girly!! YAY!!! Like I said I don't know why I'm so excited, but they are everything I want all in one perfect bundle! Now, nobody better steal them from me ;)

I'm so happy for you!!!

That's great news!
Are you in the US?
Is it typical that they would fix gp before they are adopted?

Thanks!! But I still have to get the parentals okay, which is a battle in its self. Anyways, what are the age/weight requirements before a girl is spayed?

Kim-I think it is to insure they aren't used for breeding or any accidents. I'm not sure if it happens all the time with small animals, but it is fairly common. Often times a shelter will do it as soon as possible so they are neutered before they are even up for adoption (cats and dogs anyways)

From friends I know they do it with cats and dogs. I guess I never thought they would bare the expense of another animal.

Kim- I am in the US, and yeah, I am quite pleased it is required; I would be too nervous to do it as my own decision. And in a way I'm glad it would be the new pig ( if I ca even get her) because if Squint had to get neutered I would have a like week long panic attack and be out-of-my-mind scared all day during his surgery. Haha, I know that kind of sounds bad, but its true- I LOVE that Squinto

I looked at the GP rescue they have in Knoxville, TN.
I saw females listed that were spayed...
I am in shock. I thought it would be a UK practice.

I am wondering now if I should look into getting a spayed female companion for Charlie... something to meditate and pray about

I've heard they're in high demand! Here is the second issue: how can I introduce Squint (an intact male) to a non spayed female? She won't be spayed unless I adopt her, and getting her spayed just so they can meet seems like a big risk? Is there something I could use to cover him or something like that?

I think I'm missing something. Why does your male pig need female pals? Why can you just get him another male?

And DON'T introduce Squint to a non-spayed female. What's the point? It takes only seconds for a male to impregnate a female. If you're talking about introducing him to the baby Abbys, you might as well wait until you're ready to bring them home, if you get them.

You didn't miss anything- I just thought a female would be a fresh start- ok I won't let him be with her before one is fixed. I just wasn't sure if there was a way to do that. I don't even know if I can get her my parents don't want another :(

Re: Bad news

Well I tried to bring up the topic of a third guinea pig with my dad (he seemed less opposed) but it got shot down quickly. And if I bring it up to my mom she just gets mad. Any suggestions? My dad said no because he simply doesn't want another, and they have made my room smell and his house smell. My mom keeps saying that if they should have a buddy we never should have gotten him in the first place. She said we could discuss it in June, but the other day when I said i had some new points for June, or something like that, she pretty much said "your not getting another". She thinks i just want more, when in reality, I'm just trying to do whats best. They just don't get it. :(
