So, lately I haven't been doing so hot, as I've been suffering from pink eye and a cold or illness of some sort that's left me exhausted all the time and icky feeling. Because of it, I hadn't been spending much personal time with my piggies. But, tonight, despite being on the verge of passing out, I decided to chop up some apple, carrots, and spinach (yes, they don't get apple often. It was a late Thanksgiving treat.) To get some one on one time, I put a twin comforter on my floor and a paper towel with the chopped food on it, and using a box and my legs I made a barrier to keep them nearby (I wasn't in the mood to chase them.) While most of my pigs acted like they had before except for a strange shaking they would do, a couple of them totally shocked me.
As soon as I set her down, my oldest pig, Amber, immediately got spooked as the nearby boys got into a little argument. She was so worried she didn't even glance at the food, running for the nearest space that happened to be my pelvis. Wanting to calm her down, I began to pet her and sang "Rock-A-Bye(?) Baby" in a gentle voice, a song that I'd regularly began singing to try and calm them down when they got upset or nervous (though I do also sing other nursery rhymes.) Despite me usually making her nervous, she calmed down and went to go eat the food she finally noticed. While she never let me pet her after that, I was still really happy I could relax her in the first place.
Then there was Rudy, who did something that had me ready to cry in my tired, sick state. Rudy has always been my cuddle boy since I began bonding with them, almost like my little dog, as he loves getting pet, treats, and he's my fluffiest pig. When I set him down to begin eating, he didn't even look around before chowing down like the others, almost as if he trusted me to keep him safe. The whole time, without even a jump when I did it without him seeing, I pet him, occasionally talking or singing a lullaby to him. Despite his back being to me, and him usually shying away when I pet with too much of my hand or went to far back, he let me use my whole hand and even go to his butt with my strokes. Just that excited me, as none of the others let me pet them that much without throwing a hissy fit. I greatly enjoyed it, but once he'd eaten a good amount, I began to get tired and he was starting to lose interest in the food. So, I went to grab him, expecting a struggle to get away from me like usual. But no, he completely dumb-founded me. Without a squirm, a squeak, no sign of resistance, he let me pick him up and bring him to my chest. So shocked was I, I put him back down, expecting it to be a rare fluke. However, even that time, he let me pick him up without a problem, and only wiggled a tiny bit an inch away from the floor of his cage as I set him down.
For some owners, I know that's nothing, but for me, that majorly melted my heart. Rudy was the first pig I've ever had trust me to that extent. Hopefully he keeps up that behavior... With how much sweeter and tamer he is, he's easily becoming my favorite piggy cuddle buddy.
