Hi, all!

I am geting a C&C cage next week for Cookie (Yay!) and I am planning it out. I will probably get a litter pan to put in the corner for her since she uses the corner now in the cage that she is in, and will line the the rest with fleece.

My question is, can I use shredded newpaper for her litter pan? A lot of the bedding products are paper based, and I guess I am wondering if I can just recycle our newspaper this way?

Thanks, and I am sorry if this question has been asked before. I am new, and haven't quite figured out the search feature yet.

Thanks again!

Okay, I'll clarify my question a little bit better. Is using newspaper this way harmful to my guinea pig? The only thing I have found so far on this was on Guinea Lynx. It said, "While some people find it useful to line the bottom of the cage with newspaper and place another bedding on top, newspaper alone is a poor bedding material. It does not absorb liquids well, does not control odors, and must be frequently changed."

I am changing out the bedding everyday anyway, so odors won't be a problem for me. I just don't want to use somehting that is potentialy dangerous.

Thanks

I personally found shredded Newspaper gets soaked extremely quickly. I use fleece in my cages and then have litter pans that I line with a soft wood bedding and a little hay. However to answer whether this Is harmful to use No.

I don't see why not.

Newspaper alone is a crap bedding (not absorbant enough), but for small areas and changed frequently it is okay. I use newspaper (one whole, flat daily paper) in my pigs hay box. It does need to be changed daily, but it works fine.

Thank you Crazywiggy! I am changing out her bedding a lot now anyway, because I just worry about her, and want her to have a clean enviroment. I figured I could recycle our newpaper, and cut down on bedding costs at the same time. I am pretty sure she will use a litter box since she uses the exact same corner in the cage she's in now, and she hasn't peed at all on the peice of fleece that is under her igloo. She's a good piggie, and smart too!

So, I will try it out. I am glad to know that it isn't toxic or anything! Thanks again! And thank you too, Plopper.

I wouldn't recommend newspaper. It gets soggy quickly, and probably gets stinky. If you want a real bedding that is similar for newspaper for your litter pan, use "Yesterday's News". It is a recycled newspaper pellets. I don't think it should be used in the whole cage as it is hard, and is probably uncomfortable, but it can be used in litter pans.
