The first time I used the fleece I thought it smelled too, I think it just needed washed a bit more. I don't smell anything anymore, especially now that I have the litter boxes.

I use fleece and 2 layers of mattress pads sewn together to make a large piggy pillow. I have a litter box made out of coroplast and I fill it with carefresh. Their food bowl and hay are in the litter box also. I have a hand vac that I spot clean with. I clean the litter box every 5 days or so and wash the fleece about every week and a half. When the outside temp is above 10* I take the pad outside and sweep it off to get poop, hay and hair off before the wash. It works well (no poop in wash) and the pee mostly in the litter box. In the washer I use 1/2 the detergent, borax and 1 cup of white vinegar (no fabric softener).

Do you have it fit to the cage? Do you have all three layers sewn together?(fleece, and two layers of matress pad)

Yes, I sewed all three layers to fit the bottom of the cage. Even for my top layer that is "L" shaped with a ramp coming up through the floor. If you do this make sure you wash the mattress pad a few times before you cut it, it will shrink. I think it is a lot easier to clean this way because nothing gets stuck between the layers.
