We have had our new guinea pig a few days now and she spends most of her time in her kitchen. It is 1x2 grids large and she sleeps there as well. Because she spends all her time in there I feel that I have to change out the carefresh daily, but it is going to get very expensive!

What do you use in your busy kitchens?

I took my kitchen out but when I had one I preferred to use unscented Yesterday's News for cats. It's cheaper than the one for small pets but is virtuallythe same thing;just sold in larger bags. It needed changing less often and was less expensive. The only drawback is that it's heavy.

I don't have a kitchen per se...just two litter trays at one end of their 2x4C&C. One tray has their veggie dish and the other has the pellet dish/hay rack. I also use something similar to Yesterday's News for cats (the Aussie version anyway). It comes in a huge bag and isn't overly expensive. I change the litter trays every day...that's their main toilet area for the whole cage. I do have two corner toilets but they use them a lot less often. My hubby was in charge of them once while I was away and didn't bother changing their litter trays and by the end of the second day when I got back it was...well, distinctly unpleasant.

The recycled newspaper cat litter stuff isn't particularly soft but they've never complained. ;)

I also use the cat yesterday's news litter. I find I can go about 3 days before cleaning the cage, fleece and all. My kitchen is 1x2 and I have two guinea pigs. Mine tend to do most of their business on the fleece.

I would like to get some more ideas on what bedding people use in their kitchens...
I still using carefresh, but am thinking of switching to fleece. Does anyone use fleece in their kitchens and do you like it?

I use a layer of newspaper, a layer of aspen, and a layer of carefresh on the top for comfort. I have a 1x2 kitchen, and Macy does all of her business in there. I spot clean daily by scooping out the soiled aspen and carefresh and do a total clean every few days when the newspaper is wet. Because it can get icky, I am fixing to change to a 2x3 kitchen and then maybe I can clean a little less.

I have half of the loft fleece and half of it carefresh. She like to tinkle on the carefresh right by the fleece. I scoop out the bad every other day and replace it completely once a week. This may all change when #2 pig is added.

I made double sided fleece pads with 2 layers of u-haul pads inside for the 1x2 kitchen area. They use one corner of this area especially for a potty area. We clean it out twice a day. After a couple days I can flip the pad over and use the other side. Then I can replace it with a clean pad after 4 days or so, that way I can go a full week before we strip the cage for a full fleece change.

Note: after the picture was taken below I made a slipcover out of fleece for the cloroplast kitchen box because one of the piggies was chewing on the exposed plastic. We also have a much bigger "hayrack" too, LOL!

I use fleece for my kitchen as well but now with two pigs it gets so messy in there... I'm thinking of removing the kitchen altogether, but I notice they use that divided off area to get away from each other also. Not quite sure what to do... If I do keep the divide up I may very well start putting Carefresh in.

I use a towel on the bottom, then fleece, then newspaper. I only do this for the kitchen area. Most complain about the newspaper...but I am telling you its amazing! I am lucky to have a pig that goes in one corner. Which is the only place I put the newspaper. Every morning and night it takes me under 30 seconds to roll up the newspaper that is covered in poo and pee and throw it away and lay a new one down. It makes my cage look fresh and clean. If you are worried about the ink, you can always use a sheet of plain paper. It may not work for everyone, but I love it. Plus because I change it twice a day it never has enough time to start smelling.
