Would the Doxy take care of any lingering UTI issues as well, if there were any?

One would hope! It all depends on the infection, but you should see improvement within a few days of use. If you go a week and nothing changes with them I would let the vet know.

is this what i can usually expect or are they really pretty healthy generally and i just have to find the right thing sometimes?

They should generally be pretty healthy. In the past year I've only had 2 vet visits for my 4 pigs and many fosters. Hopefully once they kick this you will be in the clear for a while.

Great, i know they came to me sick, my sister didn't know or take very good care in my opinion, and they were like you took them to the vet????? I was like yeah, they were sick, duh!! If this URI hadn't been so hard to kick we would have been done a long time ago, but i'm really hoping the Doxy kicks some serious butt and we can be done with this! I don't figure it matters either way, though, i won't get rid of them, i love the crap out of them. Thanks for your help!!

So another update...
Both boys have been on the Doxy for eleven days now. I didn't really see any improvement over the first week but am giving another week now because they have been on so many different A/Bs already and i don't want to hop around without giving it a chance. They don't seem to be getting worse, which is good, but don't seem to be improving either. Turbo still has some labored breathing going on, sometimes he sounds good, sometimes he doesn't. He's still sneezing, although less i believe, with snot coming out upon sneezing. Diesel still has a bit of crusty nose and some snot upon sneezing. I am running a vaporizer plenty during the day to give them more moisture as the vet advised, but not too close because i worry about making it cold for them. Turbo-three weeks of Baytril, two weeks of Bactrim, now eleven days of Doxy. Diesel-two weeks of Bactrim for possible UTI, then he started this sneezing and snot thing at the end of the Bactrim and is doing the Doxy the same as Turbo. So my question is, what do i do next? I'm still holding out hope that the Doxy will kick it, they both have the 5mg/kg dose Pinta recommends on GL. How long should i stick with the Doxy before i try something different, and what do i do next? Neubulizer, Baytril/Doxy combo, higher Baytril dose alone?? Diesel won't tolerate Baytril, so maybe a Bactrim/Doxy combo?? The good news is that everyone is eating and drinking fine, maintaining their weight (they get weighed twice a day before meds). I feel like they are not as active as they should be, they hide most of the day in their hideys, whether in their cage or in the floor time enclosure, both of which are very big. They both also have a bit of fungal ear, Diesel more than Turbo, which i was treating with Lamisil, but now am treating with Monistat to see if i get more improvement. Whew, sorry for the long post, just get it all out now, huh? :) I have seen them be a little more vocal the last few days and was hoping that was a good sign.

As far as the URI symptoms, are you sure you're not dealing with an allergy issue or reaction to something in the environment? What type of laundry detergent do you use to wash the bedding and do you use any kind of room fresheners or aerosol mists in the room? I had a really bad reaction to one of those plug in room fresheners... itchy, watery eyes, difficulty breathing, feeling congested. I didn't make the connection until it was moved to a different spot in the house. It could be something that's irritating their lungs. We have someone in our area who burns leaves occasionally. Instant asthma attack for me. Sometimes things that are lightly scented aren't noticeable to most people, except those who are allergic.

Pinky, i do have scented candles but i don't burn them in here, actually hardly in the whole house at all since i've gotten them just to be careful. I have considered changing to a free and clear detergent since they are on fleece and see if that helps. I guess the main thing that makes me think it's not that is that Turbo improved a lot on the Baytril, then a little more on the Bactrim, so that tells me that it's not just an allergy, but i could be wrong. Also, Diesel had crusty eyes till i changed from pine to fleece and had been fine this whole time, but now he's been here since mid-Jan, on fleece since Feb. and now two weeks ago got the sneezing, snot, crusty eyes, etc. The crusty eyes cleared within one/two days of the Doxy, but the rest is still the same. What do you think? I just want them to be WELL and happy for God's everloving sake, i worry for them and want to see more popcorning and activity. Part of my problem is also that i didn't have them long enough before all this started to see what was normal for them, so maybe this activity level is normal, or maybe they're still adjusting, who knows!! But i do handle them all the time and they love lap time and have been settled in their C and C cage for quite a while now so they should be comfortable. I'd love any imput you have and think i'll try the detergent regardless. Thanks!

It can be hairspray, perfume, fabric softener residue in the dryer, anything that can become airborne or come in contact with the skin. Do you ever shampoo them? It could be that or whatever you use to wipe down their cage, too. Have you changed your furnace or a/c filter recently? Dirty filters can spread dust or allergens throughout the house.

No hairspray, i actually did just change the filter last week or so. :) What about the fact that Turbo got lots better on the Baytril and then even a little bit better on the Bactrim? Is snot usually an allergy thing? It's been yellow snot. Plus Diesel was good and now he's got snot and sneezing too. I will start changing some things up to see if there's a difference, though! I have talked with the vet about the possibility, we'll talk about that again too.

Does anyone have any suggestions in regards to yesterday's post, the really lengthy one? I have to call the vet today to either tell him another week of Doxy or talk with him about what to do next and i would really like to have some suggestions to discuss with him. He doesn't work on the weekends so i want to make sure and talk to him before that. Thank you for any help!!

Okay, so i noticed there were several posts yesterday, this is the one i'm talking about. Thank you!!

You could have been dealing with both URI and allergy. Congestion and issues from an allergy could make them more susceptible to infection simply because their bodies are fighting the allergy instead, and the congestion is preventing movement of icky stuff out and it sits in the lungs and gets infected. I would look at both and it could explain why he got better than he was before but not kicking it totally. Switch to a dye free, scent free laundry detergent for starters. Heck, you could even just wash with vingegar instead of detergent and see if that helps. Vinegar will get rid of smells and should clean well enough.

I've been adding vinager to the wash and I do a second rinse, but will definately switch to free and clear and see if that helps.

I have not read the long posts yet. To be honest, it's hard to read large amounts of unbroken type. It's easier if you break up your posts into smaller sections, or paragraphs.

Have any xrays been done to see if there is any lung involvement? If there's no improvement soon, you may want to consider it. Pneumonia can be very hard to treat.

foggy, i'm sorry, i will change my writing in the future to make it easier to read. I have not done any x-rays yet and will talk with the vet about it. Some have suggested nasal cultures but i had read here or on GL that once you start A/B's it doesn't help, that it changes the results somehow?? What is your take on that? Thank you!

So i took foggycreekcavy's advice and broke up my post to make it easier for everyone to read. Thank you in advance for any advice!!
