Hi everyone, we have had our babies for a couple months now. And for some reason I have started developing an allergy to them so I wanted to try giving them a bath to see if it helps. The problem is that I went to the pet store to get the shampoo the vet suggested and they are out. They wont have more in until thursday. someone told me that I could use baby bath or baby shampoo. I was wondering if that would be alright or not?

Yes, use baby shampoo (I use Johnson & Johnson) under warm water. Make sure not to get any water in the ears of the cavy.

Some people say yes, others say there are chemicals in even the baby shampoos and only a shampoo geared for guinea pigs should be used. I'm still trying to sort out the answer to that question!

Actually, I hear most people advise against using baby shampoo on piggies. I think I'd wait until they restocked small animal shampoo.

If you're allergic to your pigs, you can't really shampoo bathe them that often anyways. Have you considered their hay may be the culprit? A lot of people have to switch from timothy to orchard grass because of allergies.

NO! NEVER use any human shampoo on your pigs. Human shampoos contan chemicals that can poison a small animal. Check here:https://www.guinealynx.info/grooming.html#bathing. It lists 3 different shampoos that you can use safely. Remember, your pigs hide illnesses because they are prey animals, and some damage isn't noticable right away. For instance, human shampoo may be hard on their kidneys-it can take years before they develop problems. My vet said to never use any human shampoos on any animals, so this is the advice I follow. If you can't find the appropriate shampoo for the pigs, I'd take allergy meds until I could find or order it.

No it's not the hay. I was hoping thats all it is but it is the fur. Every night when I pick them up to get them out for floor time and hold them for a little bit their hair gets on me and I have to change my shirt cause I start itching and my eyes start itching and hurting. This continues till I go to sleep then when I wake up my eyes is full of crustys. I was fine for the first month or so then out of no where this started happening. :(

I know this may sound silly but what if I just bathed them with plain ol water. do you think it would do any good to give them a good rinse off or just give me wet piggies. :)

It'd probably help. Even just wiping them down with a wet paper towel would help.
