Yesterday I picked up one of my guinea pigs and she seems to have a lot less hair and small bald spots all over her abdomen. I don't understand what caused this?? She has a sister and she does not have the same problem. I threw an orange in there today and clean the cage once a week. It does appear to be growing back but what could have caused this??

If you want me to take a picture, I can.

How old is she? It could be hormonal or ovarian cysts. How does her skin look? Have you treated for mites?

Does she move around a lot? Sometimes they sit in their pee and it causes scald.

I would suspect cysts or mites. Check her nipples, do they seem enlarged?

The other pig could be barbering her. Check and treat both for mites. Better safe than sorry.

Yes she does have enlarged nipples, I just noticed and was going to say here. So she has mites, I just buy something at the petstore than eh?

EDIT: Oh, yeah, she's almost two, in a couple of months.

No, you need to get ivermectin if you want to treat her for mites. Pet stores usually do not have it. They'll sell you flea and lice spray that can kill your pig because it has pyrethins in it.

She needs to go to a vet to see if she has cysts. If she does, she'll need to be spayed.

I was wondering if you could clarify on the "I threw an orange in there today". Do you mean you were wondering if it was scurvy? I don't want to sound arrogant or tell you what to do, but piggies need some good veggies everyday.
