A friend of mine surrendered her cat to the shelter about a month ago since her roomies were having trouble with the cat. She then, on the same day, went out to buy a guinea pig (a boar) and a few weeks ago adopted a sow. I thought that she'd be a good owner since she followed all the rules, read up on cavies, and she honored quaranteen during which she got her boar neutered. Yesturday she told me that she's going to surrender her guineas to petco because they're taking up too much room. I hate when people surrender their pets just as soon as they become inconvenient. What I hate even more is that this isn't the first time it's happened. Grr

That's deplorable. That's when you want to knock people upside the head and try and knock some sense into them. She needs to wait till she matures a little before trying again.

Tell your friend to surrender them to me. I have more than enough love and room for them.

Please have her surrender them to me. I live in LR . I have lots of room and love for them. I live alone, retired nurse. I'm 48y/o and can still get around. My brother is in the process of making me a 3 level cage because I have 9 piggies and they stay inside. E-mail me or reply. I don't drive but you can bring them right over. PetCO had pigs with illnesses and had to stop selling for awhile. Mary

Why on earth would you get a sow for your boar, get him neutered, and then decide you don't have enough room? And I didn't think 2-3 weeks was long enough after a boar was neutered to put him in with the sow and not have an "accident".

It just does not make sense.

Ok, I just read that you need 3 -4 weeks to wait out placement with the sow after neutering... I was wrong, sort of... maybe...

Generally it's 3 weeks, but point well taken. Why go to all the expense and quarantine time if you don't have the room or the desire to have a pet?

How far away do you live?

I went with her to the vet and I do remember her asking about that and the vet said that as long as they "played nice" the boar and sow would be okay together. I was a little skeptical, but this is the same vet that I take my kiddos to and he's always been very knowledgable. As a matter of fact, someone on this site recommended him to me and said that they've been taking their guinea pigs there since they've had them. It does seem odd though that there was no waiting period... hmmm...

It sounds very possible that not only is she looking to rehome her pigs, that she is rehoming a pregnant pig. That is just too weird. The least amount of time I have heard is 2 weeks.

"Sigh". I wish you good luck in getting her to do the right thing in finding a good home and not just dumping the poor things. Have you tried to get her to wait it out a little bit and post to the adoptables forum on CavyCages and GL? Is there a reputable rescue where you live?

A pet is a member of the family, just like any other. From the very first sentence it sounded bad, what kind of person ditches a family member b'cos their roommates feel inconvinenced. Your right that they are just looking for a reason to ditch their pets when they no longer have the novelty of being 'new'. When I was young I knew a family that went through about 20 pets this way, multiple bunnies, hamsters, cats, dogs, etc., getting a new one every 1-3 months and the not-new ones ended up being cast away or neglected. People like this just shouldn't have pets, period.

I have talked to her about re-arranging her room so that she has more space. I even offered to help her do so. I also told her just to give it some time and she insisted that the guineas have to go. I told her that the least she should do was post her guinea pigs in adoptables at cavy cages because then at least she would be able to talk to the people and know that her pets are going to a good home. She said that websites about pets freak her out and she refused to post them on the web. She then went on to say that she was sure good people went in to petco as well and that they'd find a good home that way. I insisted that people that shopped at petco would more than likely give them the wrong food and house them in a much too small petstore cage. She told me that that wasn't her problem since they would no longer be her pets. The whole situation really makes me fustrated with her to say the least.

Did you tell her that bad people looking for snake food go into petco and pretend to be good people to get um, free food?

She sounds like a horrid disgusting person who really should never be allowed to own a pet again. Too bad the law did not work that way, you abandon X number of animals, you don't get anymore. Ugh. Personally I could not be friends with such an individual, I would just end up arguing over the treatment of their pets too much.

Honestly, "websites about pets freak her out and she refused to post them on the web" That is the biggest case of BS that I have ever heard, and "She then went on to say that she was sure good people went in to petco as well and that they'd find a good home that way" Talk about working extra hard to justify your bad behavoir.

This whole thing is just ridiculous.

Well... her friend, who has a sow, has decided to take the guinea pigs. They built a C&C cage for them yesturday. So I guess things are looking up for the poor little cavies... I still feel so bad for them.

How horrible.I cant believe people.
