I was just wondering, how long does baby proofing need to be kept on a piggies cage? My boys are about 2-3 months old and I'm not sure how long I should keep it on for.

Are they too big to fit through the grids on the cage? If there is no way their little heads can get stuck, you can take off the babyproofing.

I'm not sure, I know they could get through easily a month ago. I took part of it off tonight to see and they haven't tried to get through so far.

I took off my baby proofing when the girls were about 4 weeks old. I tested it first. I took a spare grid and held it with my hand inside the cage. This was only for about 10 minutes. The piggies immediately came out to investigate, and I watched to see if the pups could crawl through the grids. One of them tried by sticking her head partly through, but pulled it back and went elsewhere when she realized it didn't work.

There should be no need for baby proofing after at the most 2 months.

I didn't need to baby-proof after about 3 1/2 weeks for my newest pig, but he's a pretty big guy! Just make sure they can't get stuck, like everyone else said, and you should be fine.

Well I took all the front of it off this morning and within 5 minutes Caramel had got through. So it's all gone back on again now. I think they're going to need at least a couple of months.

My friends baby pigs are 4 1/2 weeks old and still easily fit through the grids (the support ones during floor time).

My girls cage is still baby proofed as Baby Elly can get through the grids, she did it the other night when I was cleaning. But there is no baby proofing on the boys cage. Patch is a little larger than Baby Elly and he can't get through the grids.

<grin> Seeing Baby Elly's name makes me smile every time

Hmmm...Our babies are 4 weeks old today and our cage was never babyproofed (well except for the 4" of coroplast on the sides. we did have a grid in for support on the second level and they could get thru that but we did take that out a week or so ago just to be same and replace it with two dial rods for support. The wood gives them something to chew to if they so desire but they haven't so far.
