As I type this my pregnant pet store piggee is having her babies. I'm excited and scared but so far so good. Four so far, all alive and breathing. I just new I would miss it but I didn't. She was making alot of squealing noise when I went down to get my son ready for school so I knew it was coming. Gotta run, puter upstairs in office and piggers downstairs in living room. Don't want to miss this. It has been an awesome experience so far.

I wish I was there with you. All these pregnant piggies and all these babies. I have to tie my hands down when I read these posts so I dont go flying out the door to get me some more piggies.

It was a beautiful sight. My son wanted to stay home from school to watch but I was afraid how he would react if there were complications. Thankfully there were one and all seems well. No babies in an hour so I assume it is all over. She pushed out 4 beautiful pups in about a half hour or so. They are so adorable. Definately her first and last litter (they came with the mom). I wonder though, should I clean out the rest of the blood/placenta's that she didn't eat. I tried not to crowd/hover over the cage so I hope they all came out. I did see her chewing on two of them.

I would leave them alone for now. Let them get adjusted to their environment. Mom will take care of everything usually. Check in on them every few hours and make sure they are nursing and moving around and that mom is okay. I would wait till later today to start handling them.

Should I clean out the little bit of bloody litter and the placenta's she did not eat. I only saw two maybe three of them come out and two are still laying in the cage. Should I leave them there as well

Sure you can clean it out, no problem.

When my girl had her babies I mostly left her alone to see what she would do. After she was finished with the cleaning she thought the cage needed - then I cleaned out the litter that she left. As for the babies - I thought were going to lose one for sure - she never paid much attention to that baby, it seemed cold and alone - not moving but alive. I thought "well I will just wait till morning and see what happens" (she had them late eve). In the morning the one that was left alone was up and running circles around the other babes and everything was fine. Maybe mine was just dumb luck but I hope all turns out as well for you as it did for me.

congrats on the little ones! are you going to keep them all?

Congrats on the pups....

Congrats--- but leave the placentas in for a while. The mom needs them for nutrition I believe.

You need to remove the bloody woodchips. Anything that is not placenta or afterbirth because she'll try to clean it up because instinctively they need to get rid of evidence that a mom is with young babies.

I would also get ready to nurse them yourself if you don't see the two ones thriving.

Thanks everyone. So far they all seem to be doing fine and running around. They are not giving poor mom much of a rest though. I hope to have pictures later tonight.

The wood chips are stuck all over the remaining placenta(s) so how do I remove the wood chips and leave the placenta. Maybe I will just leave it all until I go to bed tonight then clean out any remaining placenta and wood chips with blood on.

Tinkerbell, I wish we could keep them all but I know I can't. I think we will keep one girl to go with the two we have and adopt out the other 3. Any takers???

I envy you for the experience. I have never seen a newborn Guinea Pig nor have I ever had one that was just weaned from it's mom. All my Guinea Pigs have been at least 4 months when I brought them home.

If she's already eaten a couple placentas it should be fine to remove them now. She really shouldn't eat the woodchips, etc. She might try.

Sara, it really is a special event to see newborn guineas. I was lucky enough to see 4 brand new babies within minutes of their birth. I also know it probably wasn't a good idea, but we also held them while they were still wet. It was very miraculous and it is a memory my daughter's and I will never forget.

You should leave them for maybe an hour or so, then clean up. It's so awesome to see a new piggy. Are they still wobbly and cute? It's so funny to watch them walk about when they are wobbly!

Quiet things, no they are not wobbly anymore. They were born almost 15 hours ago so they are doing pretty good now. After I made sure she had them successfully, I left them alone for about 5 hours, then only touched them briefly to make sure the babies were fine and then left them alone for another 3 hours. However, it has been kind of hectic this evening with visitors to see the new babies.

Here is a picture (I hope):

hehe I didn't even think to check what time you posted! I'm glad they are okay! Hows the mum doing? I've been wittness to a few births and I always feel immensly proud of the new mum as she takes on her role.
