aspen vs. pine

i know you absolutly, positively can not put cedar in the cage. I switched from carefresh to aspen after my huge cage remodel and it has worked fine.

what about pine? it is so much cheaper and i wanted comments from those of you who have used it.

I used it. Here are the pros and cons:

Pros:

• It is VERY cheap
• It is low dust
• It absorbs well
• It covers alot
• Remember though, It HAS to be Kiln Dried

Cons:

• It comes in HUGE quanities and may be hard to store.
• Even sometimes when it is Kiln dried it smells strong
• It Can be hard to clean out of the cage.
• It's a mess when the pigs kick it out
• It can smeel a bit if soggy and wet.

So pretty much in the long term n my opinion, Aspen is probably a bit better.

I switched from pine to aspen. I love aspen. The pine I felt was too strong an odor. The pine is the same price as the aspen where I purchase it from. I purchase the largest bag you can get and it costs me approx. $18.00.

Aspen is probably better, but a bit more expensive, too. Pine will work fine, but some people are concerned with health risks. If you still want to use pine, try airing it out for a bit before you put it in with your pig. Good luck.
