Guinea Pig in Aquarium????

Hello All!
I have a 10 gallon aquarium that I am wanting to make into a home for a little piggie. I realize that this is a little small, but I have a very limited budget. If I gave the piggie LOT"S of floor time, would this option be OK? I only have about thirty dollars to spend on cage, food and accessories.

Me Again

I am also considering making the aquarium a multi level cage (With a ramp and stuff.) and a screen top. I have lot's of time to spend with the piggie but VERY limited budget, have heard of and considered ammonia build up and can clean the cage everyday if necessary. The dimensions are, 20inX11inX11in. Or 210 square inches (I think, didn't really remember how to do square inches...)

I would not reccomend using an aquarium at all. Not only is it badly ventilated, but if my calculations are correct it would give your GP a space of less than two square feet to move around in. The average suggested space is 7.5 square feet. I am just now upgrading to a C&C cage, but have had a cage that is too small for way too long. Trust me it's far better to have a larger cage if at all possible. Have you considered a plastic kiddie pool? I'm not sure how much they run for, but it might be worth checking into and I've heard that they also work well. Also have you checked all your options as far as C&C cages are concerned. I got a pack of 24 grids at Target for $15 and the nearest place that sells coroplast will give me a 4'x8' sheet for $16 making a total of $31. I know that means you wouldn't have enough money for all the rest of the supplies, but see if you can save up your money until you have enough to buy a larger cage and supplies. In my experience you'll regret it if you have a cage that is far too small. Sorry that this is so long, but I hope it helps

Ok,
Taking all of your advise into consideration I have come to a solution. My sister has some shelves made with the storage cubes. I am going to buy a big underbed container (39inX19inX7in), put the cubes around it and set it on a table in my room. I figured all the numbers and all the special stuff I was going to have to buy for the aquarium (Special water bottle, hayrack, and everything else) I will come out about the same as before!!!!!
The only problem now is finding a guinea pig in Oklahoma. I cannot find a breeder and everyone I have talked to is telling me to go to petsmart to buy one. I have just sent an E-mail to the second chance place here, so I will see what they say.

Alternitive to Chloroplast

Hi Again,
I am trying to develop a cage design in my head and want to make a shelf in the cage, across the back. Chloroplast is not available here, what could I use to cover the grids???? I am trying to think but have not had any success... I don't really want to use carpet, It would get to dirty. Wood would stink. Maybe something else plastic but I can't think of anything like that. Maybe if we brainstorm we can find something........

Did you even read my post? That is not what I am even talking about or considering to do. What I was asking about is if anyone knew a good alternitive to cloroplast for an upper level for a cage. I welcome any suggestions on this topic.

Good question. I've been having a similar problem. I was thinking of simply piling layers of newspaper on my shelf, but it's not going to be very big. It might be worth experimenting with. Good luck and please share if you have any better ideas

I used linoleum on my cage. Try that. You can find it at Home Depot or Lowe's.

If you're talking about the floor of the second level, just let me know what the size is, and I'll ship you the coroplast for free - cut and scored to the exact dimensions you need. (shipping charge only). Nothing will be as practical as coroplast.

In fact, why go up? Since you have all the grids you need, why not make the lower level bigger - I'll cut and score you the coro you need for that for free as well. I'll ship it to you for only the shipping charge. If you need to make a cover, I'll include the instructions for it. It should be less than $12 for the shelving needed for a cover.

Any color you want - green, navy, black, or silver/grey. Piggy will be happier in a larger first level, but if you want the second level - rather than using carpet or something that won't last, I'd rather you have the coro for them.
