We are redoing our cage, again. We have a 2X3 double level cage. Both levels are 2X3 and open in the front and/or top. The space we have it in right now is a tiny bit cramped but that's not the problem, the problem is that they're down on floor level and so don't get a ton of light right now just by virtue of where they're located in the house and being on the floor. I'm thinking of converting a shelving unit from Lowe's into a new double or even triple decker cage. It's a large metal shelving unit with particle board shelves. It's 48in long and 24 wide so it'd be longer than what we already have but 4 inches thinner. Plus it'd be higher up off the floor so they'd get more natural light plus be able to see the people in the house better since nothing will be blocking their view at that height. It's a 5 tier unit so I can use the very bottom shelf for storage of their food and bedding and our notebook that I keep track of weight and food likes/dislikes in. I'd be able to close it off with the cubes and zipties and keep it able to open in the front.
Think this will work? I already have the shelving unit so I won't have to purchase anything so it's not a risk to do it and end up scrapping that plan should it be a bad one.
We have 2 sows that we adopted just before Christmas and they're only 3 1/2 months old so they're still growing.
Any input would be helpful.
Here's a link to the shelving unit if you wanted to see what I'm talking about specifically. (broken link removed)
