I did a zip code search via the link provided and there is no one listed near me. (Well...there were listings for Gary and Chicago - neither is a practical option. However, if the vet in Gary is really good I could go to Gary.)

I live in Chesterton, IN. I've found two vets that will treat GP's but they normally see cats and dogs.

Thanks!

Glen Park Animal Hospital in Gary treats hedgehogs, according to Hedgehog Central. You might call and see what their expertise in guinea pigs is.

Sibley Animal Hospital is in Calumet City, IL. That's about 30 miles from Chesterton, but I have to drive 30 miles to an exotic vet, and they and I are both in the city of Houston. They have a person on staff who lists himself as an exotic specialist.

Maple City Animal Hospital in La Porte says they treat exotics, but no details.

I have no knowledge of any of these vets. I googled them up on the web. You'll have to call and see what their qualifications are.

If it were me, and the guy at Calumet City seems legitimate and is really certified in exotic medicine, I'd go there rather than to a vet practice that just says they treat exotics. You'll save money and worry in the long run.

Thanks, I was planning on calling the Gary vet but I did not know about the one in Calumet City IL. Calumet City is about 50min away - longer with today's snow but it is supposed to snow more tomorrow so today w/b best. Neither Gary or Calumet City are very good (i.e. safe) areas. I am surprised to hear there are decent vets in either area. I will need to go while my children are in school. (I volunteer in Gary and my husband and I have an agreement that I will not take the children with me since there are shootings, etc. in parts of the city.)

bpatters,
What am I looking for? Is there a special ceritfication? Sorry I'm so clueless...

The first vet office I went to has two vets that 'have and interest' and 'treat' exotics as well as dogs and cats. The one I have an appointment with tomorrow treats dogs, cats, exotics and wildlife - he's around 60 and is a one-vet-office. Should I be looking for a vet who only handles exotic pets?

ok...I cannot edit my previous post...I sound like a paranoid nut! I commuted to Chicago for 18 years but I guess I am getting a little too 'homebound' lately :>(

I’m updating my own thread in case anyone else ever needs this info.

The vet at Sibley Animal Hospital, Dr. Romney, sounds great - but the office staff tried to talk me out of the appointment! They said it would take me so long to get there that I should try to find someone closer.

I called my vet for the dogs and asked who they recommended. It turns out there is a vet in Portage who has specialized in exotics for 30 years (Arbor View Animal Hospital). She sees a lot of guinea pigs and has special training and UTD accreditations in exotic pets. All of their vets are specially trained in exotics. I am taking Caramel and Duncan in to see Dr. Dartz tonight.
