Hello!

My Ruthie is a peruvian. She has the most beautiful hair but sometimes it gets matted. I usually try and give her a bath but the bath doesn't seem to be working and she hates getting wet. Does anyone else have a peruvian or a long haired guinea pig and how do they deal with this problem? I don't want my beautiful Ruthie to be upset but I hate to cut out the matted hair :-(

Thanks,

brush her every day during lap time

I trim up the long hair on their rumps and leave the rest.

Long haired pigs may need their cages cleaned more, and like loves2travel mentioned, a good brushing daily may help a lot too.

i do the same as Erin8607...

i trim the hair on the rump or rather any hair that grows to the floor. but because it has been such a hot year, i have kept my piggies hair really short so he is more comfortable.

im not sure if this applys to guinea pigs but dogs with long hair can cool themselfs cos of something special i dont know how to explain it but people shave there dogs thinkin it will cool them but they are wrong so does it apply to guinea pigs too or not?

Actually loveheart dogs can only cool themselves by panting, wich as you can imagine doesn't really help a lot on a very hot day. So shaving them does help them stay cool because they don't have sweat glands like you and I do (neither do guinea pigs wich is why they over heat easily too) to help keep them cool. I don't know where you got your info from, but I think it's safe to say that you were missinformed.

oh ok thanks
