ppl were putting in their 2 cents and so was i. i'm not offended or upset in the least. actually, i come to this particular thread for a good giggle. and after the night i had, i need a good giggle

There was a neighborhood boy when I was growing up who would go around shooting songbirds, not game birds, but songbirds, and put them in a pillowsack and show everyone. He loved to do this and giggled at the reactions of people. He didn't do it because he thought it was right, or because he was going to eat them. He giggled because in some far, dark, secret place in his heart, he experienced pain and he got pleasure by inflicting the pain on other creatures and other people. As his head hit the pillow every night, I am sure that he visited the sore spots he created and giggled himself to sleep.

Giggling at provoking pain is not a sign of maturity and neither is it a sign of someone who is comfortable with him or herself. It is a sign of a twisted and tragic life. It is to be pitied.

So you have cats, who I am guessing are not allowed inside. You have a mouse problem, but because they don't come when called and still have mice they are useless? Sounds to me like you have no connection with them and have not bothered to make a connect, nor have you tried to train them. I know people may laugh at that but cats are trainable. Spook is one of them. He comes when called (I can even whistle to get him to come). He knows several commands such as sit, stay, come (or as we call it come a come), off, up, and touch (which is him standing on his hind legs reaching up and touching). (for those interested in cat training a friend of mine who has helped me has some tips on her blog: A 'B' Word: Clicker Training Cats)

I can think of many things that are a "plague" to farmers and cats aren't one of them. Many farmers seek out cats.

Umm no, I in fact have low opinions of that group, but that's my opinion and choice, stop assuming that because most of us are against breeding that we are PETA followers. I'm sure there are a few here but not all of us are.

I just wanted to add to this,

I agree that cat's are VERY trainable. Jonesie (my Devon Rex), fetches, comes when called, will jump on the bed when I pat it, and his "litter box" is the toilet.

I also disagree that they are useless. My cat brings me joy every single day of my life. I've had him since I was 4 (17 now), and he is the one thing I can count on that won't get mad or ditch me. He's my little buddy. He's my warm "water bottle" when I'm sick, and I swear they can tell when you're sad because they seem to always be able to cheer you up.

If you tried getting to know them, maybe you would have a whole different outlook on animals.

Cats are so far from useless... My cat brings joy to not only me but my family and is in training to become a therapy animal. Is bringing joy to sick people, and helping children to read useless? He also helps me a lot with my own disabilities by helping to calm me down when I'm having a panic attack. He can sense it and will come up and ask for attention when I'm about to have a panic attack, it calms me down a lot and makes them shorter and easier to handle when I focus on him and petting him. Is that useless? There is not such thing as a useless pet, not even thinking about all the joy they bring to us the simple act of having something to take care of, something to research, something to watch grow and to train, a reason to wake up, something to tell your secrets to, something that opens doors to meet new people, ect, has been shown to have tons of physical health benefits and mental health benefits. I don't feel that's useless in the least.

Within 3 days of bring Brewster home he killed 2 fox that tried to come after my youngest goats. That is the function of a Great Pyr.

Maybe if you actually treated your cats like they're pets they may actually do some work for you. My cat, whom I've had for 13 years, didn't start bringing me "presents" until she realized that I cared about her, I fed her and let her inside when it was cold(despite how crazily fluffy she is). And she was a feral cat, she lived off what she hunted. These days she is inside 24/7 and observes the birds outside her screened in balcony.

GP = guinea pig. Not Great Pyr.

She is asking you to explain what function guinea pigs serve.

sorry - to me GP means Great Pyr - and GPig is Guinea Pig
what purpose do they serve?
good question....
entertainment, a learning op for my son when he shows them and the judge explains things and when he learns biology and what not thru 4h - right now? they serve the purpose of driving me totally buggy chewing on their apple sticks i just got them "Nibble Nibble Like a mouse..." :D

i've had cats all my life - my first memory is Muffy - she was a long haired calico and my best friend - i cried for days when she passed away - i was 8 - as an adult - i find them useless

and talk to other farmers.... cats are a plague - everyone thinks "o, they farm, they MUST have a rodent prob, will drop Mittens and her litter off here and they will have agood home"
i have at least 2 litters dropped off EVERY SINGLE YEAR
2 summers ago i came home to a wooden crate on my back porch - i opened it up and it had a divider down the middle - on one side was a momma with 4 and on the other side were 6 more - did not belong to momma as she hissed at them - this past winter i came home and saw something purple at the mouth of my driveway - i got out and looked - it was a pair of 3X purple fleece pajama bottoms - in retro spec i should have kept them for Gpig cage! - and inside those pants were 2 kittens that didnt even have their eyes open
cats are a plague to farmers.....
and (ps) thanks to a low cost - NOT FREE - spay clinic for farmers - i spay and neuter every single cat and go thru 50# of cat food A WEEK - they are a plague and useless - doesnt mean i kick them to the curb to starve - i have a heart - unlike the idiots that drop themoff at my door - and some i manage to rehome and some run away... that is the facts of life...

You don't have a cat problem. You have an ignorant people problem. Don't blame the poor animals for what ignorant owners have done.

Point in case <giggle>

you have no idea who i am - for that matter - i could be some evil twisted millionaire that get HIS rocks off by taunting others - on the other hand - i could be some kindly old gramma that has nothing better to do with her time than ruffle the feathers of others - yet you are SO SURE that i am some twisted tragic waste of life <giggle - snort>

when i first moved to this town there was a town wide yard sale - so i drove around - i came upon this obese young boy on a JD yard tractor dragging a kitten behind tied with a piece of bailing twine - i promptly hit my breaks - took my jack knife out of my pocket and cut the twine and took the cat in my van - the boy went screaming to some old lady who waved and said Thank YOu as i drove off - that kitten ended up loosing an eye and just died 2 months ago at 12 years of age - she stayed outside mostly but came in as she please and usually stayed in in the winter in her old age

so yea - call me twisted and tragic - you haev NO idea
i'm an old lady farmer who has seen alot of life and i get a kick out of you righteous ones that think they can ban together and control everyone else - i bet you voted for obama too
so sue me - you wouldnt get much - and that would give me a giggle or two also!

Thank you, seveneves for saving that poor cat.

I understand you don't see breeding as a big deal, but a lot of people on this forum have seen first hand what back yard breeding incidents have done. A lot of people have rescues, and they have to turn pigs away, because of pet stores and breeding. A lot of people have seen the suffering that happens as a result of breeding.

It is totally different when it comes to endangered species or what not, but small animal breeding and factory farming will never be okay with me. Nor will puppy mills or breeding other animals for pets.

And especially not mass breeding for food.

sadly true - but i have AT LEAST 12 cats that live in my garage at this point in time - i feed them and water them and take them to the vet and i still have rodents (besides the ones in my house) and there's one Tom that is so onry that he attacks ppl when they get any where near him - so we give him his space figuring he has been sorely abused - point is - i have mice in my hay loft - i have mice in my wood pellets - my feed gets kept in totes to keep the little buggers out

there is an over population of most species in the US - i'll be the first to admit that - like i said - all cats and dogs here are altered - HOWEVER if Nero or Nico or whoever that was from the Phillipines is breeding for food or whatever reason it is none of anyone's business! no one here tried to understand his situation - y'all just jumped on his back with your band wagons

there are kids in my 4H group that raise Boer goats - they are meat goats - I raise dairy goats for several reasons - the main one being - goats are my children <3 and i couldnt eat one or sell one for food - HOWEVER - i know they are raised for food and that ppl eat them - i know my husband has eaten goat - i did not talk to him for a week - lol - but life goes on - when we had a bigger farm we raised DAIRY CATTLE for the same reason - one year we came home and found a heifer drowned in the pond (winter - fell thru ice) she was not dead yet and we tried like hell to save her - when we realized there was no saving her my husband slit her throat and bled her out - i bawled like a baby all day long but DANG was she good eatin'!

breeding will never be controlled - there will always be that person that has some abandon farm house or old warehouse with tons and tons of animals - and the more laws that are passed the more the animals will suffer because the more sneaky those ppl need to be - i dont condone it - i just face reality - i lost my rose colored glasses a long time ago - after all - look how well our gov't has controlled the drug trade ;)

Ornery tom, lol. That reminds me of a cat we had when I was little bitty. His name was Blacky (creative, I know). My parents had gone to a friend's house, and their neighbor kids were tossing a kitten against the garage wall. My dad was *mad*. He scared the kids off (at their own house, lol) and grabbed the kitten and brought it home. That poor cat was never quite right. He was sweet enough, but man, he'd startle like nothing else. If you walked up on him while he was sleeping or whatever, he'd jump up and climb you. Like, literally. That's him. He's (obviously) the black one.

IMG 1386

The white one was Pandora. She was my first cat -- would follow me around everywhere and caterwaul outside my bedroom if she got locked out. Adored her. Still miss her after 30 some-odd years. And then there was Cephas. We had him in Germany. Talk about an ornery tom! That cat would climb to the tops of the doors and wait for me to walk by, and then he'd launch himself onto me, claw me -- bap, bap, bap -- before running away. My mom theorized he just liked hearing me scream. Rotten cat.

I think it is an insight into your perspective, and I mean this sincerely, that you can talk about an animal (cat) being useless, and yet you seem to have gone out of your way to help so many of them throughout your life. What you did for the kitten was pure kindness, or at least justice -- and you continue to let cats live around you.

I'm personally not interested in having the government (whether the U.S. or elsewise, we aren't all US citizens) interfering in our personal lives. Which is why I like a forum like this one, where perhaps we can persuade, cajole, educate each other and see if there is a better way. Like not breeding over-bred animals.

i help all animals because without humans they are helpless - just because i dont like them doesnt mean i am cruel to them - there is enough cruelty in the world without my help - and the reason i have 2 of the gpigs i have is because they have already been over bred and deserve to retire in peace and quiet

ps) all 4 of them stand on their back legs every morning squeaking at me to get their breakfast - funniest thing ever

my boyfriend in highschool had a siamese female like that - we would turn the lights down and curl up to watch a movie - honestly, his dad was there too - and that dang cat would curl up in john's lap then slowly climb to the back of the couch - curl up around his neck then reach over and SMACK SMACK me upside the head and take off like her tail was on fire - and she was NOT declawed...

asnnbrg My mum grew up in Germany lol

The attatched picture is my lovely Devon, Jonesie!

I believe he's the sweetest cat that's ever lived... He wouldn't hurt a fly.
