I currently have one male guinea pig who doesn't like other male guinea pigs (as i was told by the rescue) I was talking on another thread and they said that i could get a female becasue they would get along.

Should i get a spayed sow for him?
If i should:
Does anyone know where i could get a spayed sow near RI? I looked on petfinder and i found one but she is on PA and that is really far. And i don't want to get my male neutered (sp)
I was also wondering how could i convince my mom to let me get another one? I haven't told her about this at all.
Thank you!

Hi:

The rescue I help out with will usually get the females they adopt out spayed at a discount price - though the adopter has to pay for it along with the adoption fee.

Sometimes you can also find a spayed female that has been turned into a resuce or shelter. You are too far from NJ or I would give you the name of a rescue that I know has 2 spayed females right now.

I'm not sure how you can convince you parents into letting you get another pig. I will leave that up to one of the younger posters who have had to deal with that issue. Though I believe other the initial cost of getting the new pig it really shouldn't cost anymore having 2 instead of 1.

Good Luck with your search.

Thank you!
So you think i should get another one? I jsut don't want my gp to be lonely.

I'm really not a good person to ask since I have 4 and up to recently was keeping up to 4 fosters.

I have a female which I took in as a single and then started adding the others. They now are all the best of friends, though like people do bicker once in a while.

I was fostering single males and when they were adopted they went to homes to be the cagemate of other males which has worked out great. You could always try a rescue and bring your male to meet another male and see how it goes. You would know almost immediately if they are going to get along.

ok i am going to ask my mom.

Good Luck!

I'm checking Petfinder for you.

Perhaps you could ask the rescue if he was paired with another dominate male. This could cause them to both fight for top pig status. Perhaps he would do well with a subordiant adult male or a young boar. He may not feel he has to be such a "tough guy".

And since it sounds like he's been living alone for a while already, you could consider leaving your name and phone number with local shelters and rescues so they can give you a call when they receive an altered female.

Good luck!

I'm not sure how far you live from the 2 shelters below, but they each have a male pig.

Rhode Island SPCA
South Kingstown Pound

I live near to them. RI is really small so anywhere in RI or conneticut or Massachussetts would be ok for my. I am not sure if he would be good with the males i will try if my mom says ok. I am going to try to find a spayed female. Thank you for looking.

I did e-mail the person i rescued him from and she said that he use to antagonize males. I am not sure what age the other males were.

How old is your boar? If he is young and dominant, he could be paired with an older submissive male or is he is older and dominant then he could be paired with a young submissive male.

he is almost 2 years old.

Find a real young submissive boar for him if you can't find a spayed sow.

I am going to try to find a spayed sow. I talked to the lady i rescued him from and she said she tried putting him with all the boars she had and he didn't get along with any of them. I am not sure how old they all were but i think some were around his age.

There is also the fact to consider that maybe most of the ladies boars were dominant too. It takes trial and error to try to get some pigs to get along with others.

Ok thank you! If anyone can find a spayed sow could you please tell me?
Thank you
I am going to try and ask my mom tonight. I really hope she says yes!

Im a teenager and I know how it is asking your parents. When my gp had babies my mom said I couldnt keep any but I kept telling her i was telling people about the babies but no one wanted one until she finally gave in and let me keep the only girl. The best way is to find an article on the net that says they are better in pairs then tell her that if she lets you youll do more chores or something like that. You might have to keep up with your end of the bargain for a week or so but soon they will forget all about it and you get your new piggy! if you ever wanna chat with someone about piggies im always here! I would love to meet kids that have gps!! And if your interested im starting a new site on them and would love pics of yours!

Ok i am going to ask my mom if i can find a spayed sow. I really don't want to get my gp neutered.

Tell us what she says, and show her the social life page.

Do consider getting him nuetered. Or getting a female and spaying her yourself. Usually rescues can do discount spaying. I can get you in contact with a rescue in CT that might do that for you.

Ok if you could do that i would appreciate it!

Hi:

Here is the thread you started about getting another pig. The sites I sent you are listed on there.

Good Luck!
