Well, as most of you know, I purchased my little man from a pet store...he was really young when I did so, but fortunately, I think I got a really good one. He's a real sweetie, sits still in my lap while I pet him and make all kinds of noises.

I am currenly in the process of building a C&C cage (I'll post pics up completion) and once I get a nice roomy cage for him, I want to get him a cage mate. I work full time and I feel that he needs another one there with him while I'm away during the day so he won't be lonesome.

I know buying from stores are bad, but there are no local rescues and none of the shelters here have any guinea pigs. There is one at the pet store that I was looking at when I decided upon Lucifer. It's another very young male, white albino abby.

It's been over a week and I went to the store yesterday to get some more bedding and the poor guy was still there. Either way, I feel I'd be saving a pig from a potention snake owner or bad environment. Plus, they lived together for a little while there, so they might would recognize each other. And with both of them being so young, it may be perfect for a bonding pair.

What do you think?

Have you checked www.petfinder.com by both doing a search and looking at the adoptables section of the classifieds? Have you looked at (broken link removed), both at their classifieds and at the rescue listing? You can also do a search on google for humane societies or small animal rescues in your area. It's really not good to get the pig from a pet store, there are an incredible amount of homeless piggies. If you like, I can help you search if you're willing to give me your location! Good luck with the buddy and the cage! I'm really glad you're getting one.

Yes, I have...I live in Birmingham, Alabama...the only shelter that has a guinea pig per www.petfinder.com is in Mobile.....about 4 hours from me. (broken link removed) doesn't have any listings for Alabama and when I clicked on the 'shelters' link, none of the shelters had guinea pigs.

If you are willing to drive, you may want to contact the rescue anyway. Some are willing to meet you half way or they have members willing to bring pigs to you. I am almost 200 miles away from a shelter and the woman who runs it is bringing my adoptive pig down this way...about 50 miles from me. She was headed this way on non pig related business and I can wait 2 weeks for my girl to come home.

It doesn't hurt to ask if they can meet you or if someone is coming to your area. They may also know of an unlisted rescue in your area that may have pigs. You just never know unless you ask :)

Have you checked google for a humane society? Also, even if it is a long drive, it will be worth it to give a piggy a new home rather than buying from a store. I know it will be more difficult, but would you take convenience over rescuing a piggy in need? It's up to you, of course, but that's what I would do. Good luck! =)
