Hello all! I am new to the forum, and new to guinea pigs. After about a month of prep work, to make sure they woule be the right addition to our family, we went out and picked some up. Unfortunately, we had to pick them up from a pet store. (I didnt want to drag my family on a six hour trip to our nearest rescue.) We got two, each from a different location. The first place was very knowledgable. They knew the age and where they came from. However, the second place I went said the pig I got was anywhere from 3 to 8 months old. She is just barely the size of my hand though. When struggling, she can squeeze through the grid spaces. (It takes alot of work though) Any guesses on how old she might be, based on the size of a grid space?

That baby pig is NOT 3-8 months, its around a MONTH or less old, I dont know what you should do with the grids though, I need help with that to because there is a pig at a shelter that is the same size, and I'm going to hopfully get him.

But they can be seperated form their mom at 3 weeks.

That was my guess. From all I have been reading, I was able to make an educated guess. I have no worries though. I know that it is not recommended to keep them in an aquarium, but I made it well ventilated. I made a little playplace type thing inside the aquarium. I will upload a pic soon. Maybe I will do that right now.

You can overlap the grids to make them babyproof. Look in the gallery under grids or babyproofing.

yes sounds like you have a very young piggie on your hands. i just cover my grids with a layer of wire mesh so the baby piggies wont climb through. this should help.

You can also just make the coroplast walls higher since they are new, or with cardboard if you must.

Is cardboard OK? I have a ready supply of cardboard at work. I know it would have to be changed often, but is it OK to use if I am prepared to change it.

Yes, it will work. If you have cable ties you can use those. Good luck!

wow! they must be REALLY young! Ive heard (form someone on this forum, cant rember who!) that at five weeks old, a piggy is very near their adult weight. However, the person who i talked to could have been wrong. But she knew because her females had given birth before.

I did just have a thought. How large are your grid spaces. I got the ones that target sells. Maybe mine are a bit larger than usual?

Um no Targets are the standard size. I use targets. I don't know what the measurements are.. Pretty much everyone uses Target grids if they can get them.

They should be a little over an inch or so, I believe. That's incorrect, l2t, because I got mine at around 1 and a half months, and they were about 1 pound. At 6 months, they were 2.3 and 2.6 lbs, and now I think they have leveled out, as they are approximately a year old. I'm just celebrating their "adoption" (even though I was dumb and didn't adopt) day, January 11th.
