Hi there,

we had to take our little Sparkle in to the vet this morning for a suspected injury - we thought she might have broken something, so we wanted to get an xray to make sure nothing was, in fact, broken. I'm happy to report that they did not spot any breaks on the xray (which she had to be sedated for, for a short time). My question is this: since we got back, she literally hasn't moved! She's like frozen in time. I'm not sure if it was the sedation, or the anti-inflammatory shot she got, or what - she's in her own space for now (vet suggested separation so she could recover and not get bullied over in the main cage). Any clues how long she's expected to stay in this "frozen" state? Before we took her in, she was at least eating normally and looked alert - moving around was a problem, hence the visit - but this is frozen in place.

Question #2 : doc suggested simethicone for excess gas that he spotted, told me to get it OTC in liquid form at a drugstore - I was thinking just regular Gas-X - anyone ever heard of doing that?

She will likely be spaced out for a day or two following the anesthetic. I've had several pigs have the temporary anesthesia, and their reaction has ranged from what you're experiencing, to full on wandering around like a drunken sailor and flopping wherever is comfortable. If it continues much past a day or two, I might take her back just in case. I'm glad nothing was broken. She may be in enough pain that she doesn't want to be mobile.

What you want to find at the drugstore are infant gas drops. You can find them under the brand name Ovol, or some pharmacies carry them under their own generic brand name. But they are called simethicone drops. Both Sly, and more recently Scooter had issues with bloat though Scooters were much more severe than Sly. Scooter was getting 1.7 CC every 12 hours while dealing with severe bloat.

Wow, thanks so much! That really puts my mind at ease. Right now, she's currently chilling/spacey, but just a little while ago she was munching on hay and looked a little more alert.

She did get some pain/anti-inflammatory meds, so I'll be giving those later. I'll also look for those drops at the store, thanks!! He did mention that the bloating wasn't that bad, and by comparison, the .2cc/every 12 hours is certainly well below what you were giving your pig, GuineaPigPapa! I hope your piggy is feeling better!

Thank you for that, I appreciate it. We actually lost Scooter a few weeks ago, not sure if it was complications from the bloat, or a possible bladder stone that got trapped in his urethra. Whatever it was, it happened in a matter of hours.

Your piggies bloat may not be bad, but its possible it can get that way in a hurry so definitely keep an eye on her.
