Adding on to our cage

Okay, I can finally get around to doing this (now that my moms cancer treatment is done). I have felt terrible about the cage our Tbunny has been in. Of course I try to give him as much time out of it so this isn't a problem. He's out in the morning for a couple hours and for quite a while in the evening, he just goes in to nap during the day and when we're not home.

I'm a little bit challenged in the building something on my own dept. I think I'm starting to understand this though. It looks like most people have basically used those stacking cubes? I saw some two weeks ago at Costco, a large multi-colored set. I'm thinking I might pick them up today so I can get to work on this.

My problem is I am building on top of an exsisting store bought cage. I can't just scrap this cage after spending $60 on it. It fits perfectly into the amount of space I have for a cage. It was the biggest one I could find anywhere. Here is a link https://www.petco.com/product_info....1707&c3=&ct1=Rabbits&ct2=Cages+&+Habitats&ct3=# This cage has big plastic corner pieces that look like they will be in the way when trying to attach a second floor. Ideas?

Can anyone give me ideas on how to ad to this with the cubes? Do I just need some zip ties and, linoleum for flooring to make the second level? I'm going to have to cut the current top door off, which takes up 1/2 of the cage lid to make an acceptable whole for him to get up through I think (not that I'll actually leave the opening that wide) How do I ad a new door to the top of the second layer? Also, what can I put on the bottom floor that will help him get to the second? I could use some help with this. Thanks for the advice.

I think it will be very difficult to add on to your current cage. Your best bet will be to make a regular C&C condo without the other cage. You don't have to give away the old cage anyway, my rabbit's old cage has come in handy MANY times. When we had our carpets cleaned we put our rabbit in his old cage on the back porch. This tuesday we had new windows installed and we brought our rabbit and his old cage over to our neighbor's house to spend the day. Pet store cages can also be used when you are going on vacation, or as a travel cage. We store the old cage in the attic when not in use.

I agree with you on this. It will be difficult to build on top of this cage. I live in a small apt. I built my own cage with the cubes and I STILL use my store bought cage as well. I have a small enclosed deck and I place the cage out on the porch during nice days in the summer and my buns run free on the deck but will go back to the cage to use the litterbox and eat food. I also have used it to bring one of my buns for show&tell at my daughters school. I also used it when I adopted another bun and they weren't ready to be placed together. I will also use it when I move again. I don't have an attic to store it in so I place it on top of their current cage and put extra supplies in it, such as bags of hay and treats.

I think it will be more difficult trying to build around your cage rather than just building without it. The cubes will probably not match the exact size of your current cage.
