About 12 days ago, a neighbor, knowing I have guinea pigs, came to me & asked if I could care for their guinea pig. They had been called out of town on a family emergency. I agreed to help & care for their guinea pig. They brought him to me in a cardboard box which contained nothing except this tiny little guinea pig. When I came home from work the following afternoon, I noticed the front porch was empty of plants & outside furniture. After further checking with other neighbors, I learned this family just up & moved. I had no means of contacting them re their guinea pig.
This young (about 5 weeks old) baby boar was like a skeleton. I could see & feel his bones. I weighed him only to discover he weighed 2 oz (56.6 grams). I gave him pellets & hay that was appropriate for his young age. I also fed him via syringe Critical Care 4 times a day. He refused to eat greens or veggies. I made a mush & hand fed him. He still refused to eat it.
So, after hovering over him continuously, I removed the pellet bowl & hay for a couple of hours. I prepared him finely chopped greens & bell pepper. He finally gobbled it all up. Now he is eating greens & bell pepper without hesitation, hay, pellets, & lots of water. As of this post today, his weight is now o.97 oz (449 grams). He's trying to learn how to popcorn & do zoomies. His name is Sylvester & he loves to be held & cuddled.
I honestly don't understand why people woyld abandon any pet, regardless of the type of pet.
Well, he has no worries about his future life. Sylvester is niw part of my guinea pig family permanently.
I apologize for this extended post. It breaks my heart to know this abandonment happens quite often. I'm very thankful his original owner brought him to me.
