A good Cavy Carrier?

I like being able to put the piggy in from the top and the front, especially good when dealing with a sick piggy. There is good ventilation, and you can hang a water bottle on the front door. $28 really isn't so bad as you need a carrier for vet visits, traveling, etc.

I have a take along carrier, and it fits my two full grown (almost) females comfy enough for a short trip to the vet ot store...but when I take all four out I use a laundry basket with a flannel sheet on the bottom and their 'CavyCuddles' (TM to me! lol) inside there and they have enough room to move around comfortably. That's what I took them in when I went to the Pig-nic.

And as far as the blue carrier above, I wouldn't trust that to fit one pig let alone two, wieght wise. I don't think it could handle that weight. You can find cat cariers cheap thesae days. We have one at my store for under $20.

I have the blue carrier and I must beg to differ. It is one of the strongest and well made carriers I have used and I have used a few. It is plenty big enough to carry two piggies for short hauls to the vets and the weight allowance of 10lbs is more than enough. My two full grown piggies combined come to 4.5lb's. How many 10lb piggies do you know? I must say I would rather use a carrier designed to carry animals than a laundry basket. How big is the laundry basket you use for 4 piggies? How do you secure that by the way? In the event of a collision I know that my animals are in a safe, well designed, appropriate carrier that is secured by a safety belt. What make and model of carrier do you own? I would like to see how it is better.

I am about to be the proud owner of two female cavies in May. I can't pick them up now since I have final exams to prepare for and my mother says I need to study for that first before I get them. I have done at least 4 months of research on the care of guinea pigs and bought the book The Proper Care of Guinea Pigs by Peter Gurney.

Just as a sidenote: Toss the book in the recycling. It's not that great, I've read it. Some information is good, but some is frightfully dangerous. Thanks!

Also, don't buy one at a pet store! Look at a fleet farm or something else, target, anything. Good luck!

I thought Peter Gerney was a respected cavy caretaker? At least that is what I read some where????????????

Probably on a breeding site. That's why he suggests you feed them poisonous food--Gerty's. Yuck. He also feeds them goat feed and fiber made for horses. He doesn't think vitamin c should be in foods. Sad.

Oh, and he also suggests that you bathe them in shampoo made for us, says the medicine is "ivomectin" (it's ivermectin.)

In regards to the blue carrier...it is extremely strong and durable. I love it because the whole top flips open and makes it very easy to get the boys in and out. We don't use it for long drives because it can get a little cramped. We have taken them on trips with us and for that we do you the laundry basket. But for trips to the Pig-nic and things like that, the blue carrier works great.

Durable, easy access, and easy to clean.

However, Peter gurney DOES have a lot of good information as well. loves2travel, I used my 2x1 grid 'carrier' for about an hour and a half and they seemed pretty comfy
