Hi everyone!

First post here, I made my first C&C cage today, a 2x5 for my two guinea pigs, Karmer and Jerry. I wanted to make it bigger because we are planning on getting another piggy until....

I noticed Kramer mounting Jerry. When we first got Jerry, Kramer was the dominate one, but didn't think anything of it. We called the a pet store and they said that male cavys are more agressive. No problem. Comparing "Sexing" pictures today, I noticed that Jerry was instead a SHE.

To make a longer story shorter, I believe Jerry is pregnant. Is there any kind of resource online to see what GP look like a different stages of gestation? For the last month or so she hasn't liked my husband on me touching her sides. She starts squeeling. Also, she has been spending a lot more time by herself on one side of her cage.
Regardless of if she is pregnant or not, now we have to get rid of Kramer. So, it has been a big day.
Any and all suggestions/support would be appreciated!
nancy :)

Did you get the both at a pet store? You should never listen to pet store employees. Why don't you get Kramer neutered instead of "getting rid of him"? He isn't a piece of clothing you no longer want. Why does he have to go when you've had him longer?

There are photos at www.guinealynx.info and weight charts if you search the forums, but you usually cannot tell until 5-6 weeks along unless you get an ultrasound.

How long have you had them and how old are they?

Unfortunetily, this is a consequence many people face when purchasing a cavy from a pet store.

A cavy will feel firmer around the sides when she is pregnant. Read this page: https://guinealynx.com/breeding.html

What you need to do is seperate them now- calling the pet store and complaining may get you a free cage for temporary reasons. Next, you need to think before you get rid of Kramer. Can you put him with the male pups? How about getting him neutered? There are possibilities and I would certainly choose those over giving up my pigs.

You are exactlly right, I worded that wrong and I am sorry if I offended anyone. Kramer does not have to go, you are right.

I think we have had them about two months now, give or take. They were adolesents when we bought them, but they appear to be fully matured now.

My first mistake was getting them at a petstore. Never again.

that is a good idea- putting him with the male pups. That is why I posted here, so I could get some good ideas.

Yes, if there are any male babies, they can live with Dad, or if there are only girls, you can neuter him.

You can put a divider in the C&C, so they can still interact. It'll be less stressful if she has her friend nearby. Just make sure he cannot get at her. Sometimes they will manage to get over the wall, or jump onto a pigloo and leap over.

Have you been weighing weekly? That would give you a good indication as far as pregnancy. You can usually tell when a sow is getting close to delivering by checking her pelvic bones to see if they are spreading apart. Do a search a guinea lynx as there a ton of threads on it there.

Please do not get rid of your little male piggie. He can easily be neutered to live with the female, or if you are keeping all the babies he can live with the boys and mom can live with the girls. Good luck for a safe delivery . . .

You will probably have to babyproof the cage also. At least the cubes I have are big enough for the babies to pass right through them. I just put two layers of cubes, slightly displaced from each other to make smaller holes. If you devide the cage using the cubes that's a good thing though, the first three weeks the pups will be able to spend time both with mom and dad by walking through the devider (while mum & dad won't be able to). After that you'll have to separate them according to sex and babyproof the devider also.

Oh, and I guess you'll have to rename Jerry to Elaine :)

Don't "get rid" of Kramer - it's not his fault that the petstore guys sexed Jerry wrong! He just did what he had to do, and since you wanted more pigs anyway, I don't see much harm done. Don't punish him for human ignorance.
