C&C 2x8 Cage Help!

Call me crazy but I'm taking in FIVE guinea pigs today. They are currently living in a 2x8 C&C cage. I'm wondering a few things.

1) If my 2 girls get along with them, can I combine the cage with my 2x4 or should I just house them separately?
2) Can there be "too many" as long as you have a big enough cage?
3) Is 2x8 actually a good size for 5 sows?
4) How is the best way to make a lid for such a large cage?

They can all live together if you put the 2x4 and the 2x8 together and if the introductions go well. See http://guinea-pigs.livejournal.com/3002707.html for how to do that, and do it when you've got a LOT of time to observe and make sure they're all ok together.

Closet shelving makes an awesome lid, but unless you've got other animals that might get in the cage and harm the pigs, you may not need one.

You sure you've got enough money put back for vet bills? You're just as responsible for their medical care as for their food and hay. And exotic vets are expensive. Where in Texas are you?
