2nd story substrate

I just built a second story on my C&C cage. Now I am wondering what to use up there. Should I use aspen or a piece of rug or outdoor carpeting? I assume they will soil the top like they soil the bottom. But I am worried about them eating the carpeting. Mine are all chewers, but it seems so many of you use fabrics in your cages. Any problems with them ingesting it?

My little guys don't seem to mess up the upstairs like they do the downstairs.
I get cheap packages of white handtowels from the hardware section of Wal-mart (1 dozen for $3, I think) , and use those. I can replace them every day because I've got dozens of them, and if the pigs nibble them, well, they're cotton. Non-toxic. But even the chewiest pig doesn't seem to want to eat them.

Well, I finished the second story addition. My husband cut plywood for the ramps, and I laid a cut piece of rug on the ramps so they can get traction. In the top I just laid newspaper for now, until I think of something better. I'll try to get a good pic this afternoon.

To my surprise, mine didn't poo or pee much on the second story. Mine are BIG chewers, but they never chew on the towels I use for bedding. You can try towels and change them every 3-4 days.

fleece is a good alternative for bedding on any level of the cage. Towels are also good for cages. My girls usually pee downstairs or upstairs in the hay box.

Mine don't mess the upstairs either. I have fleece/towels up there (or sometimes just hay) and it can go weeks without being washed because they never pee up there.

Well, so far, they have only a peed a little upstairs. No major pooping up there. And suprisingly, they have not tried to chew up the newspaper yet either. I'm sure they will though once they get more comfortable!

Wow! I can't believe how much they like the ramps. They run up and down, up and down. Also, they do not have an enclosed hide box now, just the ramps to run under, and they are SO much LESS skittish now. Before when I was using an enclosed hide box, every time they saw you they hauled *** into the box. Now, they don't even run. It's like your not even there. Of course, when I go to pick up one, they still run away, but they are not frantic to get away like before.

My second and third story is carpet mats, I bought about 15 of them for 1.99 and then I layed a cotton fabric over them so they dont chew on the carpet. They urinate infrequently up there. So far everything is working out great. I change the carpet mats and fabric every 2 weeks. Just throw them in the washer.
