I would just like to point out that there is a noticeable difference in the amount of "popcorning" I get as a result of adding a second floor loft. They love it! Up and down, up and down. Its like the greatest thing you can have in their habitat.
The size i made is only 1x2 cubes upstairs and I made the staircase with two bent cube sections lined with coroplast and linked together with (instead of zip-ties, which are not removable) pieces of pvc pipe that are 1/2" OD. I cut the pipes into 1" pieces and made a cut in them with a sharp knife. They act as little round clips which snap over cube sections and can serve a lot of purposes in a cavy cage. The pipe is really cheap at any home improvement store. They seem to have no interest in chewing the clips because they are smooth plastic. I also used the clips to fasten 1/8" plexiglas upstairs to the cube material. I lined the stairs with stair tread carpet, which is about $1 a foot on big rolls at home improvement stores, and you only need 6" worth. it has carpeted grooves going perpendicular to the stairs all the way up, so it is soft and has lots of traction. Its also real easy to clean, cause the underside is rubber. WOW! do they fly up and down it. I would also like to add that they never "go" upstairs, either. so I would definately recommend adding a loft to anyone.
