We just put ours in our regular trash and it never smells or makes a mess. Putting a trashcan on your patio sounds like a great idea! I had a trashcan in my bedroom when I lived at home and had my chinchilla.

I thought I read somewhere that it's between 65 and 72 degrees. I don't know for sure because we always have our heater/AC set to 70-72 so I don't worry about it

The bottom is Coroplast, sometimes called corrugated flute board. You can get a 36" by 72" sheet at Home Depot for less than $12 but they call it Twinwall or something I think. It only comes in white at Home Depot though. I do know you can order different colors from guineapigcages.com though.
