Bonding handle my pig or keep my distance?

Just a small thing that I am finding very good while taming my guinea pigs is not to chase them around when you want to pick them up. Just imagine that something 50 times the size was chasing you around a cage, you would be fairly scared. Instead try to pick them up while they are in a hideys...

Dominance Is mounting a normal behaviour for females

Hi, today I saw one of my female guinea pigs mounting the other. It scared me a bit. I have had them since late August so I think I would have at least seen signs of pregnancy if one was a male. I am fairly sure they are both females though. I am just wondering if it is normal for females to do...

    Hay Adding herbs to hay

Hi, today I bought two small square bales of hay from a friend. I am delighted because they are about 30kg each (66 pounds) and they were only €2.50 each. €5 (£3.94, $6.31) for 130lbs of really good hay!! When I came home from buying the hay I was thinking that maybe I could put some herbs in...

I am not against breeders. (Rant)

I am just going to add a few points for the pro (responsible) breeding side. When a good breeder is improving their stock the pups they produce will be of good quality and conform to standards. Most of these pigs would not go to pet homes but go to other breeders who would not be interested in...

    Hay Got my KMS Hay!

Burgess xl pellets are not the best guinea pig pellets available in the uk, they are very bad actually. Try Jr Farms Grainless complete guinea pig ( zooplus.co.uk) bunny guineapig dream (zooplus.co.uk). Supreme vet care (amazon.co.uk) is also an ok pellet but not as good as the other two.

Hay Not happy with Small Pet Select, getting stingy.

I'm just reading through this thread, and I just want to say that hay is a very difficult crop to get right. Even one shower of rain can completely destroy a whole crop of drying hay. It is never going to be perfect every time from any source. If you really want to be sure of the hays quality...

    Just getting started!

When you say 30x60 do you mean 30cm x 60cm or 30 inches x 60 inches? Other than that you sound like you are well prepared for them :)

Upper Levels Lofts and counting as floor space

So I have my girls for about 3 weeks now. They still haven't got names yet though, I can't decide. I only took two of them in the end. My friend decided to keep one girl to make a trio. The only thing I am a bit worried about is that they were separated from their brothers at 4 weeks and I am...

    Vegetables Parsnips and turnips

Hi, I'm just wondering if parsnips are ok to feed guinea pigs? They are like a white carrot but I don't see them on either list. And on the feeding chart it says turnip, does it mean actual turnips (also called white turnips) as in the small ones that are about the size of a tennis ball (and...

How Much? Growing grass for my guinea pigs?

I have been growing wheat grass for my hens for years, I never knew I could give it to guinea pigs. The wheat I plant is whole feeding wheat that I buy anyway because I feed it to my hens straight too. I get a 25kg bag for €6 at a feed store. Then I plant it in trays with potting compost. I put...
