I don't suppose there's any kind of 'natural bleaching' stuff for pigs or rabbits, that one could use?
Also, I just read in another post here that a constanly wet bottom could be a sign of a bladder infection? She does feel constantly wet down there -- which is also new.. any thoughts?
Hmmm...pee stain. Hadn't thought of that, or heard of it before. In terms of the cage, it's a fleece-lined 5x2, for 2 pigs -- so they've always had plenty of room. I felt all the fleece tonite and didn't notice any damp spots. The only thing is we stopped using towels underneath the fleece...
I have an Abby with white fur on her backside, and she's developed brownish stains on her butt area. She's often wet down there (just peeing), and she definitely does not have any loose stool. My theory is that it may be the "cat" version of the Yesterday's News I've been using lately, because...
Thanks for all the responses -- extremely helpful, and I decided i will err on the side of caution and ask all the questions I feel necessary. (Any of you sweet people in the Maryland area, and interested in a pair of nifty little piggies?? :-) )
As for the habitat, I will be donating the...
I will shortly be needing to rehome (2) of our piggies, and will list them here in the near future. My question is this: I want to be sure that the adopter will provide a C&C environment of minimum standards that I'm comfortable with. For example, these (2) 4 mo old females pigs live in a 4x2...
For all members here who speak languages other than English, can you share how you talk about piggies in your language?
Of course, how would you say "Guinea Pig" or "Cavy" ? What other names do you call them, like "pigs", "piggies", etc?
What about other terms that come to mind? Like...
I'm using store-bought hay racks (mangers) in the kitchen areas of our cages -- the kind that hangs inside, on the grid. I've tried two kinds -- Superpet brand (wire frame), and another plastic one with a lid. I dont like the plastic version, because it seems the piggies cant easily pull out...
We adopted 2 bonded, spayed females to room with our 2 month old male. We've done 2 "introduction sessions" between him and each female separately (using the "Dating Game" technique published here). One female was wary but tolerant (a little teetch chattering), but the other would up fighting...
We just got (2) spayed females from a shelter, and are introducing them to a 6 week old male. We would like the 3 to live together -- the two females are 2 years old, are bonded, and lifelong partners.
Question: we just tried introducing one female and the male, and things generally went...
I can make it any size, really -- for that large a group, I was thinking the equivalent of two, 2x6 levels connected by a ramp. My question was more about the nature of the animals and their social structure, behavior -- the space can be as big as it needs to be.
Well, we've somehow gone from 2 pigs to 8 in 3 months (don't ask).
My question is, I'm trying to decide the final habitat structure. Assuming the newest additions get along after introductions (now in quarantine), is there any reason why it's NOT a good idea to house 8 pigs in one...
I've noticed a number of C&C cages designed with at least some of the grid walls cut to half-height size, to allow easier access and handling of the pigs. I've even seen this done on second stories, by experienced cavy owners who seem satisfied with the safety of this design.
Opinions on this...
In my search for cheaper sources of Carefresh Ultra, I'm coming across some "horror story" posts on the web regarding pigs catching mites from Carefresh bedding. Some advice given in these cases is to freeze (yes, in your freezer) the Carefresh for 48 hours to kill potential mites.
First of...
Has anyone ever found something that works well as a 'spacer' between cube panels instead of using the usual connectors? I'm trying to find a way to use the connectors that come with the cubes on the bottom and sides (for stability, and secured w/ zip ties), but *not* use the connectors along...
Thanks 1frankie7 --- do you mean you use fleece in the kitchen area? I use fleece in the main space of the cage, but carefresh in the kitchen (but would like to try aspen there instead). Fleece in the kitchen would seem like a mess -- is it?
I've been using Carefresh in the kitchen area, but the cost is killing us! At $20/bag, it's *easily* the biggest 'operating cost' we have. We have 6 pigs, so we go through alot of it.
Aspen is about half the price, but I've never used it before -- anyone have any thoughts?
Hasn't lost much so far, although I just began tracking his weight. In 3 days, he fell from 299g to 297g -- may not seem significant, but in the same period his other 3 littermates (still with their mom), *gained* between 8 and 12 g each.
Also, the apparent lack of drinking water from his...
We separated a male baby at 3 weeks, from his mom and littermates. I've just began weighing him over the last week, and I've found that he's losing weight slightly. Meanwhile, his littermates are gaining weight rapidly. He's eating very well, but he doesn't appear to be drinking *any* water. In...
