Is fleabane OK for guinea pigs to eat? I haven't found any info here or on Guinealynx. This question came up when I forwarded the photo below, and someone recognized the plant and raised the question. After doing a little searching, I haven't been able to come up with a verdict one way or the other.
Mine's definitely sick. He's gaunt, has little energy, and his fur looks greasy and sickly. We've had him drink some water and mashed up some sunflower seeds, peanuts, and regular gerbil feed for him. He seems to be eating some of that.
He's been skinny since we got him last November or so...
I had fun with another 30-minute guinea pig project: a cozy for my pigs.
I reinforced the opening with an extra strip of fleece so that it would stay somewhat rigid even after the pigs stepped all over it, as they so enjoy doing.
Unfortunately, it came out a little small: only 8"x11"...
I had seen some suggestions of getting old coro campaign signs and using them to make C&C cages. At first I considered putting the sign portion on the inside so you would only see a little bit of it, but then I thought about painting the outside, so you can have any color you want, and keeping...
So yesterday, my pigs were fine. Everybody was happy and popcorning and having no issues whatsoever. This morning, Fred won't put any weight on his left front paw at all. I have an exam at nine that I absolutely cannot miss, but if he isn't better when I get back, and I doubt he will be, I'll be...
These gerbils have been in the works for about a week now. Towards the end of last week, my boyfriend decided he wanted gerbils. So over the weekend, I looked on Petfinder.com to try to find some close to us, in hopes that we could get them from a rescue or shelter instead of the petstore. My...
A few days ago, I made my first of quite a few crafts for the pigs: first was an adorable fleece tunnel that I made with a brown inside fabric and a green monkey fabric on the outside:
I really like this tunnel because of how stiff it stays, even though there's no batting/foam/anything inside...
I'm trying to make a hay rack for the guinea pigs' new kitchen, but I've heard mixed reviews on bending the grids. I've heard anything from heat them up first and then bend them, to just step on them and pull. Does anyone who has made bent grid hay racks in the past have any advice? I've tried...
Well, I finished my second cage liner today and did a cage change, they'll be going in the wash tonight and I'll be seeing how my first uhaul blanket cage liner does. I wasnt' tremendously impressed with it as compared to my fleece and towels before; I think I should have added another layer of...
Last Sunday I moved into an apartment with a few people, one of whom has a cat (Trogdor). At first I was pretty happy because despite pretty substantial cat-proofing, the cat was taking very little interest in the pigs. All has changed now. Trogdor finally figured out how to get up on top of the...
I just put the lid on the pig cage today. I got two five-foot pieces of 18 inch wide linen closet shelving and it fits perfectly over my cage. I zip tied the back piece all the way around every half-grid or so, and I zip tied the front piece to the back piece.
As much as I don't think a cat...
Well at long last, I have an apartment for next fall, when I'll be starting college. My roommates are Alex (boyfriend), Khan and Josh (very cool, chill, fun to be around strangers whom I just met today), and Trogdor the cat.
The a/c is via window unit, but it seems like it stays cool enough for...
In about a month I'm moving in with a couple who owns two young cats. I've never owned cats and never had much experience with them, so I'm hoping that the design I've developed is sound.
The 2x4 C&C is going to be elevated so that it sits about three feet off the ground. I'm going to use...
I've been doing some budgeting lately and the pig costs between pellets and veggies and hay are really starting to add up every month. Here's what I'm looking at to feed two pigs for a month:
$5 every week for veggies gets me:
1 head green leaf OR romaine lettuce
1 carrot
2 green bell peppers...
For the past week or two my guinea pigs have had increasingly mushy poos. They're not the diarrhea kind where they're runny and painful for the pigs, but just soft enough that they step on them and they get stuck under their feet and smell awful.
I tried decreasing the amount of veggies and...
I can't believe this. I was running late this morning and left the Baytril out of the fridge for about eight hours today. It says it should be kept refrigerated, but does anyone know how long it can go without refrigeration before it is no longer any good? I just spend $23 on it yesterday, so...
I've heard stories of guinea pigs occasionally being able to escape their C&C cages and go for a wander around the house. This is all well and good as long as your house is pig-proofed and your cage isn't several feet off the ground.... neither of which apply to me.
I wonder because I just...
I've read and been told from several sources that probiotics cannot hurt a healthy pig, so I've been giving my guinea pigs acidophilus in their veggies because my guinea pig Ani is on baytril. It's helped her tremendously, but since I started the veggie regimen I've noticed that my healthy pig...
I noticed today during floor time that Ani's throat looked a little puffy, so I checked it out during lap time and she has one large and one smaller lump there. The larger one is about grape-sized, and I looked around on GuineaLynx and there appear to be quite a few things it could be. I know...
I know a lot of people on this site compost piggy poo and hay to replace store-bought fertilizers and manures. However, I've also read that guinea pig poo is very acidic and requires special treatment. I did a forum search about composting and the only solution I came up with was from one person...
