Bedding Switching from fleece back to aspen and Carefresh

I stopped using fleece also. I have boars, and Remy and Markie are butt draggers. So you'll change nice and clean new fleece and he'll butt-drag all over making it reek like skunk. Their cage is right in the middle of the dining/family room, and I just couldn't take it anymore. I use either...

    Bathing Long hair!

I agree, trim first then bathe. I have 3 longhairs which I trim. My peruvian gets a "bob" all the way around, I trim the hair just above the floor length (above his feet) and his bangs so he can see where he's going. The texels, (long curly hair), well I believe if you could ask their...

Bedding Tried Carefresh, wood pellets. Another fleece convert!

It's the whole cage. My boars are major markers. It drives me crazy but they spend so much time dragging their butts that after 3 days the stench is pretty thick, so I wash... I would LOVE 12 days!

    Grooming Problems with Brushing aTexel

I find that my texels prefer to be trimmed short as well. I've done "lion" trims :D with a #10 on the body, and I also do an all over teddy trim, varying from a #4 on up to a 3/4HT (I was a dog groomer so I have the fun equipment). THey reall are happier when short, even though I love the curls!

Bedding Tried Carefresh, wood pellets. Another fleece convert!

I go back and forth between fleece and other things, although recently trying the uhaul blankets and they work GREAT! I can go 3 or so days before I need to pull it all out and wash. I was going litterbox-less but yesterday put back in the litterboxes in the hay area to keep the hay mess down...

Cage Water bottle & Hay rack...

My hay racks are metal utensil holders (found in the kitchen aisle). They look like miniature versions of the cattle hay bale feeders. Holds LOTS of hay and keeps it clean. Cleaning water bottles, I fill the sink with hot water and a 1/2 cup of bleach. I got a baby bottle brush. One side...

Carefresh Wood pellets topped with carefresh

Thanks to everyone for their patience and ideas. I decided to go back to fleece, giving the u-haul blankets a chance and go from there. :) I know Tico is feeling better already this morning.

Bedding Kiwi tiles in entire cage?

Thanks to everyone for their ideas, it has been a great help! Duffin, awesome double layer idea, I will try that! I whined and moaned to DH last night about what bedding to use. He talked some sense into me- animals take some care, animals have some smell. He said, just use the fleece...

Carefresh Wood pellets topped with carefresh

What I didn't like was that when I would change the bedding, the boys would start marking like crazy- hence boar butt smell, in the kids' toy room, eh, not so nice. Second, the maintenance; twice daily sweeping poos, and I can never seem to get more than 3 days out before I need to wash it...

Carefresh Wood pellets topped with carefresh

Ok, humor me one more time! :) Has anyone tried one layer of wood pellet bedding topped with a bit of carefresh for comfort? I guess I can try and see how it works out. Using carefresh alone in my 2 2' by 6' cages gets expensive faaast!

I'll look into that Duffin. Thanks :)

Puppy Pads How often do you change the puppy/chux pads?

I just tried using puppy pads topped with hay and it lasted 36 hrs before I needed to change it. Probably is different with fleece on top but this was my experience.

Bedding Kiwi tiles in entire cage?

Thanks, Lissie, that was very helpful! I am glad I cancelled the order! :)

Bedding Kiwi tiles in entire cage?

I don't use any fragrances on myself, nor do I use febreeze or any air freshener, not even in the bathrooms for ourselves. My cleaning for piggies is vinegar and water. The products I use for anything from all purpose to dish soap to laundry detergent is Seventh Generation as my DH and DS are...

Bedding Kiwi tiles in entire cage?

Thanks for letting me know. I had just ordered 3 boxes of 10 for my cage, and cancelled right after. I don't need any more work than I already have. I know there is going to be some smell but I prefer to keep the smell down as much as possible and not have to clean the cage quite so often...

Bedding Kiwi tiles in entire cage?

Does anyone use kiwi tiles in the entire cage instead of fleece? My major issues with fleece are the scooping of poos and hay frequently throughout the day and ODOR, from my boars marking and the poos laying about in the open air. The tiles look so comfy but I'm concerned that if you only...

Puppy Pads puppy pads topped with hay?

Good idea. I called the 3 other farm supply stores around the area and none carry the Dry Nest brand. One carries Dry Den which is pelleted, I may give that a try. I'll look on amazon shortly.

Puppy Pads puppy pads topped with hay?

Ok, so my experiment is about 36 hours in and I had to change out the entire thing because of the very bad urine/manure/wet hay odor. It's going to have to work for a few days until payday and then I'm going to try YN or wood pellets I believe. I wish the feed store hadn't switched brands of...

Puppy Pads puppy pads topped with hay?

I have tried the wood pellets. Yes, they are great for odor control, absolutely! They do disintigrate once wet, and those tiny particles stick to the fleece snuggle beds. It also looks a bit uncomfortable for them to walk on, although, I can top it with hay of course to make it more...
