Behavior Worried about my 3 month old sow

LOL, this is a good sign. Will be interested to hear her weight this week. Do the veggies disappear if you leave them and go away? We have 2 relatively new pigs these days and they really don't like us to watch them eat! First pigs we've had who will not eat anything when we are holding them.

Behavior Worried about my 3 month old sow

I'd weigh her weekly and make sure she is gaining. If she is, she must be eating. She does sound a little psycho! Does she just go crazy with you, but tolerate the other pig in the cage? Or is she psycho (fighting) with the other pig too? Do her teeth look ok to you? Can she open her mouth a...

Behavior Worried about my 3 month old sow

What is her weight doing? I'd track that, and whether she poops a normal amount. We've had a couple of piggies who didn't like to eat in front of us. They waited til we left the room. But the veggies etc would disappear.

Behavior Newly adopted pig in quarantine - doesn't seem to be eating hay

That is the cutest video! Thank you for posting it.

How Much? Pig is finishing all his pellets every day. Should I be giving him more?

I've usually given our piggies somewhere between 1/8 and 1/4 of a cup of pellets (per pig) and none have been overweight. I notice sometimes they go through a week of eating a lot of them for some reason and then cutting back on their own.

Vegetables Anyone ever hear of a pig not liking lettuce?

We have a rescue pig who is new to our family. She doesn't seem to like lettuce! She sniffs it, might take a nibble, but then walks away. Never had a pig like this before. When we were bringing her home, the rescue put a piece of lettuce in the box for her trip. When we got home, she hadn't...

General What would you pay a guinea pig sitter?

I'd consider local babysitting rates and figure one hour/day at that rate.

    Introductions Every introduction is different

Last night we introduced two new piggies. This is our 5th time with introductions and they never seem to go exactly the same way. Piggie #1 has been with us only 2 or 3 months. She is a rescue pig that we took, to keep our older single pig company. They were great together but the other pig...

How Many? 2 pig deaths in 2 months

The cycle of always having to get new pigs continues. We had a lovely pair for 4 years. Lost one in the spring of 2021. Went through some drama trying to find a companion for our surviving pig. Companion #1-- from a shelter. Was way too aggressive, intimidated our piggie to the point of not...

    Behavior Odd new piggie

She died overnight. Our remaining piggie is definitely sad. Subdued and quiet. Didn't want her morning lettuce at first, although she got over that pretty fast. She seems more affected by this death than the death of her prior cagemate, whom she had been with since they were babies! So now...

    Behavior Odd new piggie

When she saw the vet, she was behaving normally. Just very very skinny and we were trying to find out why. She didn't act sick until a day or two ago. We didn't take her back because it is unlikely that she has anything that can be cured for more than the very short term. I have tried hand...

    Behavior Odd new piggie

Thanks for the kind words. I don't think she was heartbroken. *I* am heartbroken now! She was such a good fit for our lone pig after her original cagemate died. Very energetic, friendly, enthusiastic, but also submissive (in a good way) allowing our other pig to be dominant. I really don't...

    Behavior Odd new piggie

One more update on the little piggie. She's been with us about 6 weeks. She is dying, likely tonight or tomorrow. We ended up taking her to the vet since my last post. They checked her out, agreed she was very thin, said she seemed otherwise OK, did some blood tests that were all normal, and...

    Behavior Odd new piggie

Thought I'd give a little update. We've had the new piggie for 3-4 weeks. She's much more mobile now. She still keeps her hind leg at a strange angle sometimes, but she's going through tunnels and exploring the platform etc. She doesn't stand still in one spot all the time like she did at...

    Behavior Odd new piggie

Definitely not blind or deaf. We've only had her a few days. She interacts well with us. Our other pig seems delighted to have company and we're really glad she's here. She's just very stationary. I don't think she can jump. I'm watching her rear legs and wondering if she has an orthopedic...

    Behavior Odd new piggie

We have a newly adopted pig who has me stumped a little. She is 3 years old. We got her as a cagemate for our 4 year old whose previous cage mate died a few months ago. It has been a very successful pairing-- they seem to get along cooperatively and our original piggie is clearly less bored...

Nutrition How good/bad are corn husks?

Trying to help her get more calories. Her appetite is kind of low. She hardly eats any pellets. Is there any nutrition in these?

Nutrition How good/bad are corn husks?

Our 4 year old senior pig has been through a lot lately. She lost her companion, then did not get along with an aggressive potential cagemate. She hasn't had much of an appetite, which have attributed to aging and stress. BUT we gave her some corn husks and she went crazy for them. Ran around...

Introductions How long should they stay in the neutral cage?

I gave up . Original pig did not leave the corner all day. She did not drink any water, and only ate a few veggies. New pig completely dominated the cage, was all over the place and wouldn't let original pig move. I couldn't go to bed tonight this way. So we moved the new pig to our holding...

Introductions How long should they stay in the neutral cage?

We've been delivering take out of hay and wet vegetables to original pig, who remains hunkered down in one corner of the cage. New pig is roaming freely and parks herself right up against original pig. Original pig is 4 years old and more frail than at her prime. I hope this is not too much...
