This is something I have actually considered doing! But as you said, I will have to watch carefully that he eats enough.

I can lay some loose on the floor of the cage. However, most of it ends up on the floor anyway by the end of the day because he picks through it and discards what he doesn't want (which is everything but the flowery tips). I'll try laying out some fresh and see how he reacts to that.

Thanks for the input. I am going to buy a small bag of timothy/orchard grass mix and see if he eats more of it than the timothy alone.
