Cavy Condo #4 - Guinea Pig Cages

I finally have it built. Almost anyway. I still have to build the cabinet doors for the bottom but it is mostly finished.
Some notes about the cage:

Yes, that is stain you see. It is safe to use for piggies. If you decide to stain an enclosure like this, DO NOT USE OIL BASED STAIN or PAINT! Use WATER BASED.

I put in some recessed lights on each floor. They do not produce a lot of heat at all. In fact, they are cool to the touch. I can turn one side on and the other side off using two switches. If I want to add a little warmth, I could switch these lights out for a hotter type light bulb such as something like a 10 watt halogen bulb.

Cabinet doors will go on the bottom floor so we can hide their food and supplies. I'm trying to figure out how to create a fancy type of door. Such as a raised panel door.

I also built them very large "sleeping quarters" on the top floor. I used the wood I used to build the cage.

The wood is solid Aspen. Same thing I use for bedding. Safe for piggys!

There are four female piggys living in there.

Thats about it.

I never ever post here ( i do read articles and videos posted around) but I needed to tell you how nifty cool this is. It's the most well made thing I have ever seen. Do you have other pets you made cages for?

This is actually the first thing I have ever built out of wood. I am a computer programmer by trade and love to build software as well as build gardens and ponds. I thought I'd give it a try because I hated the store cages. At least the size of it. So to the drawing board I went and came up with this. It turned out pretty good and the guinea pigs love it. My wife and daughter have four pigs so it is really for them. Thanks for the comment.

I noticed the images look as if I only have one lone water bottle attached to the side. I actually have a water bin sitting on the second floor as well. My wife says she thinks they like drinking from the bowl better than the bottle. I alway catch them drinking from the bowl. I think they can get more water that way. I didn't want anyone to think I was "Thirsting our piggys to death".

What kind of wood did you use to make this? And its very VERY nicely done for someone whos never built anything like this before. I'd love to see it with the cabinet doors on it. You have very spoiled piggies. My Dads a cabinet maker/contractor person and I was going to get him to build me something similar for our lizard, but I have to say, as a pig-pen it turned out very elegant :)

I used solid Aspen for almost everything. I used Whitewood for every other side panel because I ran out of Aspen and Whitewood is pretty close to Aspen as far as grain and texture.
