Unhappy OMG, Dora and Olivia are very sick

Last night everything was fine with them they ate their vegetables and were fin and acted fine during floor and cuddle time before I went to bed. When I got up this morning to go to work neither of them would come out of the Igloos, so I picked the igloos up and they both just layed there very lethargic and not moving much. So I called the emergency vet and there currently looking at both of them now. How could they be fine 8-9 hours earlier and then, not be fine now. I will be completely devistated if they die as not only was I attched to them, but so was my 4 and 6 year old daughters and I have no Idea how I would tell them.

Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry. I know how fond you are of Dora and Olivia. I sincerely hope it's a minor thing that's treatable so as they'll be back to their usual selves soon.

    I'm sorry they're ill.

Was there anything different about what they'd been eating? New hay? Different vegetable? Or had they shown any signs of a URI -- sneezing, runny nose, etc?

I dont know. They were making this sound that almost sounded like a hooting sound and that continued while I was picking them up which they didnt like a whole lot, if that makes any sense what so ever.

No change in hay, water or vegetables and nothing illness wise that I can tell becore this. The weird thing is when I got down stairs they were both laying in the igloos making a sound that almost sounded like hooting and both didnt like it when I picked them up, which makes me think that this is more serious than a cold or something like that.

Keeping my fingers crossed that they'll be fine. Which vet did you take them to?

An exotic vet hospital up by me, that handles lots of exotic pets including guinea pigs.

It has to be something that could affect both of them. Hooting can be a sign of heart disease, but they wouldn't have both come down with that at the same time. Nor is it likely that they both had an insect bite that could result in that. That leaves some kind of disease with a sudden onset, or something from food, or from the air, like a pesticide or other spray.

Here's hoping you get good news about them soon.

Unhappy Re: OMG, Dora and Olivia are very sick

The vet came out a while ago and it isn't good. They are both hanging in there, but barely and are both in large amounts of pain from what he can tell. He took xrays and both have very enlarged hearts which he says is probably something hereditary since they were both from the same litter and he believes that they both had slight heart attacks because of the enlarged hearts and he is very amazed that they were still alive when I found them this morning. I asked him if there was anything I did wrong and he said no.

So he left me with a couple of options, I could take them home and give them some pain medication knowing that they will probably pass very soon and very painfully or I could have them put down now knowing that they would be feeling no more pain and would be in a better place, but it was my choice. With tears flowing I told him, to put them down, but I wanted to say good bye first. This is one of the hardest things I have had to go through. I gave each of them a kiss on their nose and told them Daddy loves you and will miss you dearly.

    RIP Dora and Olivia.

I am so very sorry. I had tears in my eyes when I read your post. I know you loved those babies with all your heart and they most definitely loved you. For the all too short time they were with you they had a wonderful life. No piggy could have asked for a better dad. Be strong and keep those wonderful memories of them in your heart. They will always be with you.

    Rest in peace beautiful girls.
