    introducing baby gizmo

    Hello,

New guinea pig owner here with gizmo. We haven't got much of a story to tell as we've only been roomies for just about a week so far. I did adopt him from a petshop, with not much of a choice i was barely concerned. I feel that any animal or guinea pig deserves to be rescued. Although he's a bit skittish i assumed he seemed ready to begin our bonding "process" since he's been running laps almost every night, I only figured he was comfy enough. Today was that day and shockingly we snuggled for hours while i hand fed him hay. The only question i'd like to ask is why he doesn't squeak?

    Thanks

Oh my gosh, he's so cute! He's so little, any idea how old he is? Not all piggies wheek, he may start once he associates certain sounds with getting his veggies (mine goes nuts if he hears me open the fridge and then it escalates if he hears the crisper drawer). Gizmo may also learn to wheek when he sees or hears you, he will learn your voice.

I have a Gizmo too. But with pet stores, it's a supply and demand thing. If you buy they'll just come out with more pigs. It's a never ending vicious cycle. The only way to stop it is to not buy from them. If you buy one you maybe be rescuing just one. But you are supporting the bringing of even more pets to come in if you keep buying from them.

But anyway my Gizmo I got from pet store too. But I have learned from that, I didn't know how much adoption costs were but they were even less. 25 dollars for a pig but pet smart is 40 dollars and they're not even neutered. Shelters neuter them for free for you. My Giz is the opposite of your Gizzy. Mine can be the most skittish little thing ever. He's about 3 months old so far. But lately he's not afraid to just stand by cage when I feed him. He looks so cute when he does that!

And to answer your question. When I got my Gizmo, he didn't make a sound for the longest time. Like about a month. He was a silent and run type. But now I heard him wheek/rumble/squeal ever since I got Truffles. Your piggy is probably not used to the surroundings. Once he's comfortable enough and he feels at home, I'm sure he'll try to talk to you. Kinda like how a person can get shy and won't talk. Same thing with piggies.

Supposedly about 4 to 5 months. That's what I figured it'd take him some time to learn. Right now whenever I come into the room or make any sudden movement he runs into his tube but I have heard little, tiny squeaks every so often. I was talking to him earlier while I was spot cleaning and he got a little excited.

Thank you! I do understand that part about petshops. I wish there were someway we could shut down petshops and rescue every single one of them but you're absolutely right about not buying from them would be an obvious first step. I did do a little bit of research in the beginning and the closest rescue would have been hours away which was my only concern. I didn't want the guinea pig to stress out too much over the traveling distance back home. I probably could have contacted them to see whether it'd be okay.

Younger children should be taught better about this problem though. I've talked with a few who assume these piggies are dreadful when they're not to blame but the petshops themselves. They shouldn't be treated like garbage because of their current situation.

My gizmo was on sale for $35 at petsmart but $25 would have been nice guess I should have done more research. I'm sure the employees or volunteers at any rescue would have been more educated and to be honest I wasn't even considering adopting him that day, she literally pushed gizmo at me.

I sure hope so. They're little wheeks are just way too darn cute.

Well if not pet adoptions you can adopt in a different way. Perhaps checking guinea pig zone or even craiglist for people who can't keep their pets anymore or maybe the pigs accidentally had more kids. Which was my case where I got baby Truffles at 6 weeks old. He was only 25$

Aw, those ears! My guinea pig wheeks a ton, but he didn't at first. His 'sign' to start wheeking is when someone walks into the room, or he hears the bathroom door open/close.

Wow, what a cutie! I love his colouring.

My piggy Pumpkin took over a year to become vocal. Hopefully Gizmo won't take that long!

I know! That's why I had to bring him home. I have noticed that he does come out of his house whenever I enter the bedroom so i'm hoping that's a sign that he's getting a bit more comfortable with me.
