Rough Skin Spot appeared on back

Hello, I just recently got my little fellow. Had him for a few weeks and has already had a URI that he is getting over. He just took his last pill for it today. He is acting ok. But yesterday I was giving him lap time and I noticed this spot on his back. It looks like really dry skin and there are two scabs on the top of it. Help please I have no idea what it is. Im a new cavy owner and quite scared of this spot. Click image for larger version.

http://www.guinealynx.info/fungus.html this looks like a fungus to me, but I'm by no means a vet. Check out that webpage, it's very reliable. It also has over the counter treatments for fungus if you compare your pig to pictures and think it is fungus.

If it is not a fungus and use one of those creams will it hurt him? I mean i know they are sensitive to antibiotics but what about a fungal cream?

Is he itching? If so, he may need to be treated for mites.

It looks like a fungus, so something like Monistat or Lotrimin should clear it up. Read that link that @Princess_Piggie gave you. And fungus is very contagious, so pay particular attention to the cage-cleaning instructions.

I wouldn't imagine so, but I've never used one myself so I can't say for sure. You could ring your exotic vets to check with them.

I havent noticed him itching but that doesnt mean he isnt doing it. Ill look into those creams and see what they do. I dont think he has mites though because I havent seen him itch the spot at all. Just the normal behind the ear on occasion.

If he's not itching, then I'd take a q-tip and rub either Monistat or Lotrimin into it. That should clear it up if it's a fungal infection. If it doesn't improve after a couple of days, switch to a triple antibiotic ointment -- that will treat it if it's bacterial. Either way, rub it in well. Since it's on the back, there's probably no danger of the pig ingesting it, but it won't hurt to be careful.

Ok thanks for the help. And fast responses too! About how long should (assuming it is a fungal infection) it take to clear up and should the hair grow back on the spot? Im probably being a worry wort here but I'm new to the cavy scene and am trying to learn everything I can as fast as I can. He is a PetCo piggie so I'm never going through the pet stores again. Especially after reading all of these forums. Adoption from hear on out.

You should treat for a week minimum, even better to shoot for ten days. Within two you dhould notice less redness. About five days you should notice SOME hair growing back. It may take awhile for it all to come back. Dont stop trwating until the 10 days are up though.
