    Interesting Cage on Craigslist

I'm looking for a guinea pig to add to my Belle at work and today when searching on Craigslist I found this posting

    http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/n...254452496.html

For those of you who can't see it here is the picture attached....

Interesting idea. Readily available, cheap, easy to clean, looks maybe around the size of like a 2x3 or even a 3x3.

The sides are too low. A guinea pig can easily jump over the sides. I used to use a kiddie pool as a play area for them. They'd jump out with no effort.

Yep, mine stands up without supporting herself by the side of the cage when I approach with goodies. She would be out in a sec, too! Maybe good for supervised play tub but not for permanent I'm not going to be in the room to see you all the time cage.

In the pic, I'm nervous about the outlet. My pig can stretch out really long and is very inquisitive even about the tape that is holding her c & c together.. let alone that outlet.

    It is rather cute.

I'm curious though (and fairly new to piggies)... if that were put up on top of a sturdy table or raised up somehow, would piggies still climb and then fall out? Or would it be like rats that would not drop out if it were set up higher.

Pigs aren't afraid of heights. Mine has accidentally gone off the couch and I thought for sure she is hurt but luckily wasn't. You have to have at least 4 inches high or they will try and get out. C & C cages sold here offer 6" as the lowest height grids.

Even if pigs were afraid of heights, I don't think it's safe to rely on that. Things could always happen. A pig could not be paying attention, or a scuffle could break out that ends up going off the table. In my opinion all escape routes should be sealed for a cage to be safe. I wouldn't even feel comfortable with a cage that didn't have a top, though I understand that they're okay in certain situations. A pig couldn't accidentally fall out of a cage without a top anyway.

C & C are sold with 5 or 6" "coroplast" and not 6" "grids." The grids are 14" high. 4 or 6" high sides made out of any material are too short. Some guinea pigs can almost get over 14" sides.

I wouldn't keep my pigs in there myself but interesting idea. I never would have thought to use a kids sandbox for a cage.

I wouldnt have to worry about Belle escaping. She wouldnt leave the food source

But something could startle her so to cause her to bolt out of there. Sometimes my girl jumps/bolts for a reason I cannot figure. She's hearing/feeling something I'm clearly not.

That cage/sandbox is surprisingly tall. It's 15 inches.

Ahh.. but I bet that height includes the lid which adds considerable height with that dome-like thing on top. The sides may actually be half that height.

You're probably right. Now that I look at the pic of the cage again, it looks to be the same height as the pigloo.

Cute. I have that sandbox outside for my kids :O) I bet it could be adapted to be a safer piggy cage by putting in taller sides, if someone was so inclined. I like the plexiglass idea!

Reminds me of this set up. Found this, not sure where, maybe here or pinterest or Facebook. I can't imagine living with pools in my living room but to each their own.

Pretty cool set up! I'm trying to figure out what purpose the pet store cage serves though...

Very cool. The sides are a little low, so maybe you could try getting mesh cubes to place around the outside!
