This is for anyone who is getting confused with the breeds and color patterns of guinea pigs. I think I counted 20+ total breeds. Then, I'll move on to the color patterns.

American Shorthair
This breed has short, flat hair with no cow licks or rosettes. They are often recommended for guinea pig rookies as they have easier fur to manage.

American Shorthair Satin The only difference between the American Shorthair Satin and the American Shorthair is that the American Shorthair Satin has a sheen coat that is almost glimmering. This is different than a pig with a
shinier coat; they have a distinct and brilliant shine.

Abyssinian The Abyssinian typically has 8-10 rosettes located throughout its body. The perfect number of rosettes for showing is 10 rosettes. They normally appear larger than other Abyssinians. A slang term for Abyssinian is also called an Abby.

Abysinnian SatinThis is practically the same as an Abysinnian, except with a shimmer that comes from the satin gene.

Coronet This breed is a long haired breed that has a rosette, also known as a crest, on the top of its forehead. Grooming is typically more difficult, as with any long haired breed. The hair grows away from their forehead.

Peruvian The Peruvian guinea pig differs from other long haired breeds because it has one cow lick on its head that causes the hair to grow over the face. Grooming is often more difficult, as with any long haired breed.

Silkie (Sheltie) This breed differs from the other long, straight haired breeds because it has long hair that flows from the head down the body with no cow licks or crests. A healthy coat is more difficulty I maintain than with a short haired guinea pig.

image.jpg

Silkie (Sheltie) Satin The only difference is an exceptions shiny coat that carries over with all satins.

Teddy

They have a fuzzy coat with kinked whiskers. Their coat could also be described as frizzy.

This breed is often confused with the Teddy guinea pig, as their whiskers are also kinked and their fur is similar. Yet, they have a different nose shape that appears a little less smooth. Also, they appear slightly larger than American guinea pigs.

I'm coming close to finishing the breeds. Please hold your requests and comments until the end of the breeds and colors. If it's a request, you could also post a different thread temporarily until I finish.

Also, @dukestyles I'd be happy to help at the end of the list. Thanks!

Texel This breed has long, curly/wavy hair. The ringlets produce a thick coat that is more difficult to maintain. Their body is more compact and shorter. The Texel's hair parts down the middle, when grown out.

Just a tip, make sure when you post the alpaca pig you specify the difference between an alpaca and a texel because they occasionally get mixed up :) This was a great idea by the way! Excellent thread ;)

They are similar to Texels, yet their fur is tighter to their body and they have a rosette on the top of their head.

There is little info about this breed, as it is not as well known about. Yet, most agree that it appears to have kinked wavy fur and a rosette on its forehead like a Peruvian. It differs from a Texel because it has a rosette on its forehead and the furs tend to wave at the end.

This is basically like a teddy, but with a cow lick on the forehead as the Peruvian.
