    wooden cage idea + questions

I've decided that I will build a cage which will be similar to this:
    http://www.kleintiervilla.de/bilder/...anorama_b2.jpg
    http://www.kleintiervilla.de/bilder/...m-Panorama.jpg

    Dimensions:
    WHD: 120 x 120 x 60 cm
    each compartment: H x W x D: 40 x 120 x 60 cm
    acrylic glass 20cm high

    Questions:
What are you opinions on this cage idea?
Will it be big enough for at least 2 guinea pigs?
Could I use a water seal on the base or is there an alternative? (I'll be using fleece)

Re: wooden cage idea + questions

With all solid walls, 3 going up to the top, I would worry about ventilation.

The cage comes out to 3.5 grids by 2 grids it would be small for 2 pigs. Going 143 cm would be better for two piggies.

I put linoleum over the floor of my wooden cage to protect it from guinea pig mess. I've had my cage for a year and half now and this has worked wonderfully.

What are you opinions on this cage idea?
Not a fan of wood cages, they absorb bad odors and aren't waterproof. Preferably, cages with wire sides are best as acrylic glass doesn't allow adequate ventilation.

Will it be big enough for at least 2 guinea pigs?
Yes, this cage fits the sites requirements (More on that here).

Could I use a water seal on the base or is there an alternative? (I'll be using fleece)
I'd suggest lining the bottom with corrugated plactic (Go to your local bunnings and ask for coroflute).

I was planning to make the 6 glass walls on the sides go up to 20cm, leaving 20cm open. The cage will be near the window but not in sunlight so that will help with ventilation.

Ah ok thanks! I'm planning on adopting maybe 1 or 2 guinea pigs from the shelter to accompany my piggy. What would be an appropriate size for 3 piggies?

I was going to make a c&c cage before but I couldn't find any cube grids things, not even in kmart.
Do you have a c&c cage?
Also would a wire shelf work instead of the cube grids?

    Quoted from guidelines:
Upper levels should not be counted in providing the minimum square footage

I've never seen Kmart stock them over here, I got mine from Bunnings. I've seen cubes at The Reject Shop, Bunnings and Spotlight. If you'd like more info on finding C&C supplies in Australia, feel free to PM me.
As for C&C alternatives, you may want to have a look around in the gallery for ideas: http://www.guineapigcages.com/photos...ive-cages.html.

Some people prefer to use wire shelving over grids, even here in the USA. It will work just as well as the grids. =)

If properly treated wooden cages are dry and not smelly. To treat my cage I sealed all the wood in a wood floor grade polyurethane. The floor of the cage and about 3 inches up the side is covered in linoleum to protect the wood from urine and water spills. I have had my cage for a year and a half and it has been awesome. The pigs love it and so do I. Actually any time we have company over everyone comments on how neat the cage looks.

Wow your cage looks amazing!!! Did you build it yourself?

haha now i can't decide whether to build the wooden cage or the c&c cage. the c&c cage would be expensive though (6 shelves alone cost $72)

My husband and father-in-law built it for me. It wasn't cheap either. I think everything (wood, screws, poly, stain, linoleum, ect) ran me around 300 dollars but it's totally worth it!

Closet maid shelving works great. Home depot or lowes sells it and cuts it for you. It also makes great lids.

Re: wooden cage idea + questions

I know of 2 places to get the grids there are always some on ebay, not the cheapest but it's better than nothing! I saved up $70 when I was 11 to buy 1 pack of 13 grids - http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_t...at=0&_from=R40
There is also a place that sells them a lot cheaper and they delivery is only $10, I've never bought from this website before, but I have gotten my dad to buy three packets for me for Christmas - http://www.sunriseimports.com.au/sho...cube&x=15&y=10

Thank you! I'll keep these in mind. My mums friend has lots of spare wood from their house renovation and she said that she will help me build a cage. I designed this different cage that will have better ventilation but its only one level.

Do you guys think this will be able to hold 3 guinea pigs?
There is also no top on it.
Also what are your opinions on this one?

That's very small for three pigs. Can you make it at least 180 cm x 75 cm?

Re: wooden cage idea + questions

Oh but thats the problem, I can make it 180cm long but I can't make it by 75cm mainly because space is an issue. I would have heaps of space in my room for an even larger cage but my mum uses my room to store boxes of bed covers etc...

    I'm guessing 180cm x 55cm still wouldn't be big enough for 3?

I have just enough space for the depth to be 55cm, i can make it 180cm but then it would be obstructing my closets

If space is an issue, consider having only two pigs.
