What to do about my cage?

Any advice on what I should do with my c&c alternative? I usually change my cage's layout every time I clean it out because its a c&c alternative but I cannot make it bigger this is the biggest I can make it 3x3.Click image for larger version.

I'd eliminate the divider between both halves. If you can't get coroplast, find out if you can get a large piece of plastic from a mattress store that they've taken off their new mattresses. We recently bought one and the plastic is really thick. It would make a great floor protector since it's much heavier duty than shower curtains.

I was just talking about this on another thread. Joanns fabric store sells really thick clear vinyl. Like you would put over couches way back in the day or use for table cloths or heavy duty shower curtains. People use it for windows on boat canvas. I use it on my cage lid to keep my cats out of my guinea pig cage. It is very durable. Its on a huge roll. It would be very easy to clean. You can use a 40% off coupon with it, they sell it by the yard. It looks like your cage is a 2.5x2? So you probably only need about one yard.

You can probably get it for free from the mattress store. Just ask if they can save some plastic for you when they take it off the mattresses. I used mine as a drop cloth when I painted one of my bedrooms. It was huge and durable.

@pinky but wouldn't they chew on it because my gp moves his bedding/fleece around and it shows plastic sometimes.

You can lay each layer flat, then put grids on top of fleece. Your pig won't be able to get to the plastic.

I had a similar problem with Mocha chewing the coro. So I just laid a flat layer of coroplast, added my absorbent layer and fleece and pegged the fleece to the grids.

@MochaAndMoo Thanks and what things worked for you to peg the fleece to the grids? And cute piggies!

You can use binder clips or regular washing pegs.

Oh and if you want to make sides to keep the poop in, you can cut and ziptie posterboard to the edges.

I did this except with duct tape (Homemade cage, duct tape is on the outside of a wooden block) on my cage, and it helps a lot!

Re: What to do about my cage?

It's just called "Clear Vinyl" It comes in different thicknesses. The cheaper ones are around 4.95 a yard, the really thick heavy duty stuff they use for windows on boat canvas canopies (you KNOW that's good stuff to stand up to the salt water air and taking it on and off all boating season) that's about 14.95 a yard. But if you use the 40% off coupon even that goes down to like $8. or so a yard. This stuff is REALLY thick (thicker than the plastic they wrap a mattress in, but not free so thats a trade off) Also, this is vinyl not plastic (vinyl is used for durable flooring in kitchens and other rooms so you know that's easy stuff to maintain. I have also seen people use vinyl floor remnants as cage bottoms in alternative cage)

@Traysea So the Clear Vinyl at JoAnns, would be the absorbent layer or my base? Sorry I'm still new!

Plastic or vinyl would be your protective layer under an absorbent layer that would serve as your base. Moisture can pass through fleece and the absorbent layer and ruin your floor or carpet so you need something waterproof to protect it from any moisture that seeps through. Your absorbent layer would be next and your wicking layer (fleece) is on top.
