How do you handle pigs during thunderstorms?

storms? I don't know why, but for some reason my guinea pigs are FLIPPING OUT! We are having a pretty bad storm right now, tons of really loud thunder and lightening. The pigs are going nuts. They are huddled together under the hidey house shaking. I don't know if I should try to do something, or just leave them be until the storm passes? How do you handle thunderstorms? Do they bother your pigs?

My girls are totally cool with storms because they are a pretty common thing around where I live, and I just throw some lettuce in there and they are good to go. The dirt time they got scared and I let them be, with food, and now they associate storms with lots of veggies.

I wish that would work with the boys. They are just terrified! I gave them some food, and nothing. They won't come out. I've let them be, hoping that they will calm down. I don't want to get bit! (not that I think they would but you never know since they're terrified!)

I got lucky with my first two. They are pretty chill with a lot of stuff. I guess that since the storms are around a lot, it doesn't phase them.

We get a good few, but this one was outrageous honestly. Our whole house was shaking. It sounded like something exploded in my bedroom.

None of my guinea pigs have ever reacted to thunderstorms, even really severe ones.

Carlton started to popcorn during the last one we had. I think he liked the lightning? The lights were off in the dinning room so he got a good show.

Mine seem to ignore it I check on them but I guess they are used to loud noises in our house. XD

Maybe they are just reacting because they are still so new? I've only had them for about a month, and they are only 3 and 4 months old. They're doing zoomies and popcorning right now so They've recovered without a problem

My guys don't react to thunderstorms, but the fireworks tonight are really freaking them out. It's funny you bring this up now, because earlier I was thinking that my guys are pretty resilient to loud noises, and now I get proven wrong. I haven't figured out how to comfort the boys yet.

No thunderstorms tonight but fireworks instead. I have one girl freaking out, stuck in her igloo and refusing to come out and I have four girls that aren't caring either way! Which is the same when the thunderstorms are going on too though. I put a cover over the lone girl's cage and shut the bedroom door (she's in quarantine in another room for another week) I am thinking about bringing her into our bedroom though so maybe she won't be as freaked out.

This makes me wonder on how my guys will handle fireworks, since they are from Washington DC I am sure they are use to sirens and stuff like that, but I've never seen them in a storm or with any loud noises. We'll have to see I would laugh if Ruffles was just chilling and Ramsey was freaking out.

Mine show almost no reaction to thunder. We had our local fireworks show on Friday night and we are pretty close to the site. Interesting that it took place during lap time. My kids were startled by the unusually loud noises, but weren't afraid since they were in my lap. Mom's chest and lap are their ultimate "safe" place, so almost nothing bothers them when they are there.

My boys are still timid so not cuddlers. I actually want to say it was the fact that the thunder was so loud our house was shaking that upset them.

Re: How do you handle pigs during thunderstorms?

My guinea pigs usually don't react to thunderstorms that I have noticed but last night when the fireworks were going they were all a little nervous. The firework display is right across the street from us so we are super close to it all. I came inside to check on the dog, he hates storms and fireworks, and the guinea pigs were standing on the edge of their cage looking for some reassurance as well. When a firework went off, especially those big deep sounding ones, they would run around their cage making little purring sounds of unhappiness. I gave them some veggies and they seemed happier. They still purred when a big bang came.

Any storm we have it doesn't bother my guinea pig. When you get any storm throw in some of their favorite fruit, veggie, or treat. Just try and keep their minds off of the storm, you can even try placing them in your lap and pet them. That way you can keep them calm and relaxed and their minds off the storm.

I don't have my pigs yet but my dog is a neurotic mess with thunder storms and fireworks! He has a thunder shirt but nothing seems to calm him down.

Hopefully they'll get used to it. We have thunderstorms almost every day in the summer, and it never bothers the girls unless they happen to get startled by a really loud and unexpected thunderclap. Even then, it's just a temporary run to their hideys, and they venture back out right away. Piggies to seem to adapt to noise over time.
