UK Mattress pads

I see that I can't get u haul pads in the uk and people say to use mattress pads but what exactly is meant by a mattress pad?

I have googled it but it just brings up mattress toppers re memory foam or mattress protectors which I don't think are absorbent or am I missing something.

If you buy a mattress pad, you need to make sure it's 100% cotton. Some are polyester and cotton blends.
