    Sticky substance on pig's fur?

    Ok so the last few days I have noticed my male guinea pig has a sticky substance on his fur near his back end, but not like it's coming out of his bottom. any ideas what this is? should i rinse it off?

    Sounds like it might be grease from his grease gland. You can give him what we call a "butt bath", which is as the name implies, a bath for his butt only.
    If it's REALLY gunky, you can use a drop of dawn dish soap, but keep in mind that can dry out his skin. Ideally you'll want a good small animal shampoo such as Gorgeous Guineas or Squeaky Clean, but kitten shampoo will also work.

    XD ok so... how would I do a butt bath? :P I don't have small animal shampoo and probably won't be able to get one until at least tomorrow, and he's never had a bath before so I don't know how he will react. Should I just use a shallow dish of warm water?

    Welcome to the joys of a boar! It's the grease gland. You can use Dawn dish soap but I personally use coconut oil and it works wonders. I just rub a small amount of that area and work it in. Make sure you let is sit for a bit after working it in. Most of the time I don't even need to give my boys a butt bath after (that's only if the gland isn't horrible) but when I do have to bathe them after I use GG's Boar shampoo, it's amazing!

    I do butt baths in the sink. You'll just need a couple of inches of luke warm water. Wet his butt then apply the shampoo and rinse&dry.
    He should be fine until you can get some small animal shampoo tomorrow.
    When you bathe him make sure you support him and have a firm yet gentle hold on him, because some piggies will try to jump out. For your first time bathing him the bath tub might be a better idea than a sink as its not so high above the ground.

    It could be boar glue, is it white and dried?

    I fill up my sink about 2 inches with warmish water then put my piggy in slowly. Work water over with your hands then lather the shampoo in, making sure you do not get his face. I have a filled up container with clean warm water that I slowly rinse them off with. The running water tends to scare them.

    @madelineelaine
    Dunno why i didn't think of that possibility!
    If it is boar glue, i'm not so sure that a butt bath would help.

    I am not sure why either! Perhaps the way the OP said that it was near his lower back but not quite his bum?

    No it's not white or hard, it's just oily and sticky. I remember reading a thread about Boar's glue, but I couldn't remember the name at the time...

    Also, are there alternatives to small animal shampoo? I will try to get the shampoo tomorrow, but I am always looking for alternatives

    Then it's likely just grease. You can use kitten shampoo as an alternative to a small animal shampoo, but definitely never use human products on them.

    Yup. I give George a butt bath every week or two as he has a pretty active grease gland.
