Exclamation Guinea Pig after sickness and medication... and Amoxycillin treatment.

Hey all, i just wanted to share this experience and give some details and an explanation on it as there was certain circumstances.
Myself and my wife have kept piggies for almost 2 years with no illness or sickeness yet =)
Firstly, i live in Norway... and here was the cause of issues in treatment (which i must add has been amazing!).

So, on 5th March, our adopted (quite a few months ago) 5 and a half year old "Red Eyed White" piggie "Herman" was a bit lethargic, so i took hime out the cage and gave a few hours of attention... and good old fashioned love! He wasnīt eating so much and was lazier than normal... then while i was fussing over him he had a slightly runny poo. We thought maybe a piece of bad food or even a touch too much Lettuce/Cucumber for his system. As the day went on it got a bit runnier so i did an all-nighter as i work for myself and took him out and made a temporary area for him in the second bedrom. In Norway we have heated flooring in most rooms, so an old safa cushion, some fleece and food water... he was in good hands.

The next day (6th) seemed ok, no real change and i was monitoring him to see if it was wrong food, or something worse. Of course, no change (not even worse, during the day) but literally an hour after the vet was closed it went from slightly runny to foul smelling water, with jelly like poo lumps. Every time he was picked up it squeezed out with a wet-splurting sound. I called the emergency vet who wouldnīt take him until the next morning. A couple of hours after that around 19:00 he started to bleed a little then as the night went on it was more blood than poo, eventually a couple of long jelly like bood poops and not much else. So, we mashed up some food with vitamin C, and fed him water to keep him going through the night. He nibbled a little grass but was mostly laying down. A couple of bottom cleans through the night and no sleep we called the vet and got an appointment in the early afternoon the following day (the small animals specialist was doing the night shift emergency phone and didnīt start until the afternoon).

Day 3 (7th) the vet took him and we thought poor Herman was going to pass on... zero energy and quite a lot of blood was passed by him through the night, cue 2 pretty tired and distraught owners. So the vet checked his temperature and examined him... and said heīd not seen this time of bacterial infection before (he actually keeps piggies himself). So he gave Herman an antibiotic shot and 3 fluid shots under his skin and said he was very poorly and not to expect much. Funnily enough, Hermans instincts kicked in while getting the injections and i was happy to be nipped! At least he "sprang to life a little".
Now, the issues i mentioned earlier... in Norway the company that made animal antibiotics/treatments stopped doing so, so he warned us that the only thing he could give was Amoxycillin which has obvious issues. He warned us what to look out for and said the Amoxycillin destroyed the friendly bacteria and that the Canikur he was also giving us should do enough to bring it back. But, the cease of small animal medicine production (for small animals anyway) was very recent and this was his first case of using a "controversial for piggies" medicine. So, we were given the prescription for that... but... he also gave us the Canikur which is a friendly bacteria (i guess like Actimel/cultured dairy product for us lowly humans) which was to be administered also. The Canikur is primarily a dog product, but we were given the doese calculation he worked out for Hermans weight.
The doses for both were to be:

    • 18:00 - 1ml of Amoxycillin
    • 24:00 - 1.5ml of Canikur
    • 06:00 - 1ml of Amoxycillin
    • 12:00 - 1.5ml of Canikur

and to be repeated for another 9 days after.

We took him home, and obviously still in isolation treated him, whilst keeping a diary which i will abbreviate below. Iīve also got to say, i took 3 days off work and slept in the spare room so i could monitor him constantly... the rest of the days iworked worked, slept and lived in that room!

    • Day 1 (after vet): Blood only still, worrying lethargic... preparing for the worst. Stating to give him pellets and vitamin C mush and water (forcibly) and water (again forcibly).
    • Day 2: No blood or diarreah, starting to poo small smelly black sticky poop. Still lethargic.
    • Day 3: Woken up with him eating grass and chewing the door frame. Poop sticky and mis-shapen, not as black.
    • Day 4: Nibbling constantly grass, and some pellets... starting to like the taste of Amoxycillin, hates Canikur. Walking around more
    • Day 5: Poop almost normal, walking around like normal... no more us forcibly giving him food or water.
    • Day 6: Eating and walking as normal, chewing the hell out the wooden wall (itīs norway), poop is normal.
    • Days 7 - 10: he was just as normal.
    • Day 11, fixing the door frame and walls he chewed!

Now as of March 20th he is more active than heīs been for a while, nosey and causing his normal mischeif! Only issue as he was seperated from the guys for a while, he was a bit bitey/teeth chattering so their cages are side-by-side and they are more social again. Weīre introducing them a little each day and hopefully in a week or so they are all back together.

So thatīs Hermans story, and his ride on the Amoxycillin-train. I read all the stories on various sites and was real worried about it... but it seems although it had major drawbacks, the Canikur absolutely helped here. The vet called and asked and was very happy of the result, gave me a couple of questions on him, his behaviour etc and thought there was no side effects from the usage.

Obviously this seems to be a rare case, and with the medicine issues in this country (many medicines i got in the UK are not on sale here even for adults) they seem to have strong rules here. I wanted to post this to let you know what he went through, how he reacted to medicine that is absolutely not recommended and to show he is doing great. we are going again to the vet for a check up in a week where the vet will check him for any issues with the course taken, but he thinks all is fine. I was exhausted though after sleeping in the spare room all through his treatment and giving him medicine like clockwork whilst still working at home... the weekend that just passed i slept most of it after taking it free! We have 4 girls (in a seperate C&C cage) and the 2 other boys (soon to get a new larger cage) when i can seprate the guys (2 top, Herman bottom level if they never get back to happy terms). All through this, no other pig had any symptoms... and we watched them like a hawk!

Anyway, i look forward to any discussion on this... please donīt insult or berate the vet, thatīs why i mentioned the medicine issues here in Norway! And after a nervous couple of weeks, we are happy with the diagnosis, treatment and recovery! And Herman.. yup, heīs king of the castle again!

I'm so happy to hear he is back to his old self! What a horrifying ordeal that must have been. I am so thankful that I have access to piggy medications here. Even though the don't produce small animal meds in Norway anymore, is the vet allowed to have some shipped in? Herman is just to cute!

That is quite the story! Poor little cute piggy. It is very hard when they are sick. I am so glad you were able to get him to pull through and the rest of the piggies didn't get ill. Thank you for sharing your story.

You obviously have a great vet to get through this experience, especially with a normally-dangerous antibiotic. I'm glad everything worked out.

It does sound like you have a very good vet and you took great care of your pig. I'm glad that he is well. Very good story.

Thanks for the replies and the kind words... and yes, we are very greatful to the Vet as he was in a very tricky situation with the meds.
I thought iīd share it all so if another country has the same issue, all may be not lost!

And Herman is cute, but OUR boss now haha!! =)

Herman was given Amoxicillin, as in the antibiotic? I remember taking Amoxicillin myself a while back and having a terrible reaction to it. I had horrible hives and was itching for days! Haha. I'm glad Herman had a better experience than I did. He is a very handsome fellow :)

Yes, he got it and the only adverse reaction was eating our our wall! Fine for him, bad reaction for us!

Re: Guinea Pig after sickness and medication... and Amoxycillin treatment.

Despite Amoxycillin being dangerous for guinea pigs, I believe in the UK it is a very last resort to use.

    http://www.guinealynx.info/dangerous_medications.html

Vets will use it when every option has failed and discussed with owners because of the risks. If I had nothing to lose other than one of my piggies, I would opt for it and this has proved the case, thank you for sharing this touching story.

What a lovely boy Herman is and pleased he is feeling better :)
