    Constantly knocking over food bowl

Lately George has been constantly knocking over his food bowl!
I tried switching to one that was heavier but he picked it up with his mouth and flung it around until his pellets were everywhere! I quickly took that one out because it bothered me how he was picking it up with his mouth. It made me feel like his teeth might break or something. I was probably just being paranoid though.

Should I maybe try taping his food bowl to the sheet? (My only concern with that is that he might try to eat the tape.)
    Does anyone have any advice?

Hey Aleks! I had the same problem with my pigs. I found a little ceramic bowl for $2 and it's to heavy for them to knock over I am pretty sure you can get small ceramic bowls at Walmart. Hope this helps. I probably wouldn't use tape if he is a chewer as tape contains a lot of chemicals.

I tried using a heavy ceramic bowl and he just picked it up with his mouth - with some trouble- and flung it around! Its almost like he hates bowls!

My boy does the same! I would say get a plastic bowl just to avoid injury, but he tends to do it for attention or when he is hungry, I think its cute!!! One of my boys broke his teeth from chewing on his bars on the cage, hopefully the teeth should be OK from using the bowl, I think its an attention thing :-).

Re: Constantly knocking over food bowl

I went with plastic bowls as my pigs like to do the same, mainly when I'm late on pellet time but sometimes just for the sake of it even when they're full. I was terrified of the ceramic bowl landing on their 'neck' from their flipping.

I ended up using a heavy glass heart shaped ashtray type thing from the thrift store and he finally just left it alone. Now he throws his water bottle instead

I got my dishes at Walmart becuase my girls ALWAYS ended up knocking over thier dishes before they got to eat much out of them. So I got them plastic bowls that they cannot tip OR get their mouths around. I can post a pic if you want?

Same issue. I switched to a very low margin ceramic bowl and he doesn't do that anymore - probably there is not enough grabbing area or because the margins are thicker than the other one...who knows

Re: Constantly knocking over food bowl

    Hey,
    I actually don't use a food bowl for anything. I scatter my guinea pigs vegetables, and pellets around their cage. There are allot of pro's for this method;

1.) There aren't any bowls to tip over

2.) If one of your guinea pigs (I no you only have one, but this is a valid point) is dominant, and hogs the food bowl, this can solve it. There is no way that the dominant one can take all the food, if its scattered around the cage. Fights over food can be prevented this way.

3.) Its much more natural for the guinea pigs. I often put cubes of their vegetables up on top of low boxes that they can climb up onto. I also hide their food in tubes, and scatter it all over their cage

Overall, its a great way to get your pigs moving, and it encourages them out into the open, if they are one of those pigs who stay in the corner I chop up the vegetables into small cubes, and hide it in really hard to find places!!! Its like a treasure hunt

    1. I would try gravity feeders. You hook them on to the side and you fill the bin up all the way.

The problem with the gravity feeders is that guinea pigs are only getting 1/8 cup of pellets a day. That's not very much and they probably wouldn't be able to even reach the pellets with those deep-ish bins.

I found this thing at the Dollar Tree because I've been having the same problem, and I'm going to use it as a trough. I think it was originally for storage but I'm going to ziptie it to the side of my cage. I'll post pictures later!

I had that issue when my pigs were still getting used to me! They would be eating and then I would walk into the room and then they would run it over and flip it over. I use disposable bedding, so mainly I just leave it. Although for me, the wider, shallower bowls work well. Have you tried the kind of bowl that locks onto the bars? And you could also use duck tape and make a loop of it and stick it onto the botton of the bowl

I had this one in my pigs' old cage and it worked like a charm. It was so easy to unscrew and dump it You could also try a ceramic cat dish. I would think they are bigger and heavier

I just got a little cat food bowl from the pet store. It's metal and has the little plastic rim around the base, but the base is wider then the top so she can't pick it up and she can't tip it if she stands on the rim. It's the only thing that keeps Gidget from making a mess.

Re: Constantly knocking over food bowl

I used to have this problem. I bought a 3 sided bowl from a home store. The bowl usually used for condiments or whatever. So it's equal to 3 normal ceramic bowls and it's fairly shallow so the pigs can't grab it or easily tip it over. And it having 3 sides adds extra balance to it. (also helpful because I have 3 pigs)
