Thumbs up Just got back from the vet!

He doesn't have a URI, the doctor said that his lungs sounded clear and it's just a common cold.
He prescribed a short term antibiotic.
He also gave me ear cleaning solution because George had waxy build up in his ears, luckily no ear mites!
I also had him test a sample to check for fur mites, and he doesn't have any! :)
I'm so glad that my baby is okay<3

I'm not sure exactly, I didn't ask. I figure that he just scraped a little of the dead skin off or something and put it under a microscope. Why?

These samples often prove unsuccessful and are advised against because the only way the mites will show up in the sample is if they were in that specific area at the time, as far as I'm aware. Unnecessary pain for the pig really. No offence intended, just trying to explain but I can't think of better wording.

No offense taken, I didn't know that.
He took the sample from what he said was the only area that made it look like he might have mites. (It was right above his grease gland.) It looked more like dandruff to me, but I don't really know what mites look like. :x
I feel bad now, I hope it didn't hurt him a lot :(

I'm suprised he took a sample from that area, I know pigs often chew at their back when they have mites so I would have thought it would be from there - although I've never asked anyone what they're taken from/seen it done so I could be wrong.
You can't see mites with the naked eye, so it probably would just look a bit dandruffy.
Don't worry about it now - at least you know for next time so you can discuss it with the vet. The good thing is that your pig went to the vet and got the all clear. Noah and Elmo have already had two lots of injections and both times I was fighting off tears cos they didn't like it (I'm pathetic), but it's for the best!

I'll definitely talk to him about it next time. Thanks. :)
And nahh you're not pathetic, you just love your piggies a lot :P I was crying the other day because I wanted to take George to the vet that day, but we had to wait. And I felt kinda bad making George take his antibiotic, he really didn't like it, but at least he'll be healthy. :)

Noah hated me for ages after he took his antibiotics, he proper fought it too. I founnd the best way to get both my pigs to take antibiotics was to cuddle them as normal and get somebody else to syringe it in their mouth, from the corner as to avoid their teeth, and put it in far enough so that it was harder to spit out.

I put it in straight behind there teeth, when the tongue started going I dispensed it and it was done. If the pig tried to spit it out I just tilter her head up a tad to keep it in her mouth.

About the cold--guinea pigs don't get them. Perhaps what the vet meant was that George has the beginnings of a URI. If antibiotics were prescribed, he has a URI. What antibiotic is it? How long is he going to be on it?

It's called Sulfa-Trim Liquid. It's 1/2 oz. and I give him 0.5 mL twice daily until it's gone.

How old is George? Sulfa-Trim (also called Trimeth Sulfa and Bactrim) is a good antibiotic, but usually Baytril is prescribed for a URI.

I would weigh him daily for the amount of time he's on the antibiotic, just to make sure he's eating his normal amount of food.

He's about a year old. Maybe he didn't prescribe Baytril because George's lungs sounded clear? Idk.
And okay, I'll do that! Thanks. :) So far he seems to be eating and drinking normally.

Bactrim is normally prescribed for young pigs, I'm surprised he did not prescribe Baytril for an adult guinea pig as it would knock the URI out of him better. Bactrim prescribed for young pigs rather than Baytril because it stunts growth. Did he way George or ask his age when he prescribed Bactrim? I expect it will still do the job though!
It's a great sign though that he is eating and drinking normally.

Yeah he weighed him and asked how old he is. (His weight was 1,357 grams by the way, when I weighed him on wednesday it was 1,363 grams.) So i mean he even noted that George lost a little bit of weight and everything.

Some minor weight fluctation is perfectly normal. Here's a link on it: http://www.guinealynx.info/weigh.html 6 grams difference is nothing to raise the alarm about really.
